What's the biggest coincidence that's ever happened to you?

In Chicago there's a building known as the castle building. It takes 3 elevators and escalators to get to your floor to work for me - seriously you could work there and never see someone twice who also worked there. One day I went up one flight of that trek with a guy I was so attracted to. We both ran late for work. Neither of us said anything but I'm pretty sure we both felt same. That was a Friday.

I was at a sat night party next day and there he was. We dated for awhile on and off but didn't work out. Sometimes I think about him though. We never needed a lot of words. Sometimes I think we were both too young when we met to have given it a real chance together.

I was living in a developing country in South America in a small town with my husband for a couple of years (Peace Corps). We got invited to a large rural wedding. There was one other foreigner there, another American. Of course we got to talking. I come from a large family. She said she was from Portland, OR where a lot of my extended family live. After talking a little more, we realized we were second cousins. The locals LOVED this.

When I was 15 years old, my mom dated a guy for about a year who eventually moved in with us. It didn’t last long. He was a phony. He lied to my mom pretended to be in graduate school. When she found out, we moved out of the house and into another while I finished high school. I never saw him after we moved out.

37 years later, we were celebrating my moms birthday at a restaurant, with all her kids and grandchildren. We were all singing happy birthday showering her with love and adoration. He walked in and got seated at the table right next to us to have a meal with his siblings. No one spoke but it was clear she saw him - she was cool as a cucumber. I kept thinking what are the chances? What a coincidence

I was seeing 2 guys and it turned out they lived next door to each other, in the same building…and their bedrooms shared a wall. Yikes. It wasn’t even like we were in school, or a small city.

A year later, I was seeing a guy who was a professor and right after we broke up I started dating a grad student…turned out he was in the professor’s class. I had no connection to their school or field of study.

I was visiting a close friend in the Midwest and ran into a friend from New England. We hadn’t known we’d both be in visiting this town.

And this didn’t involve me, but the Midwestern friend was on vacation in the south and ran into another close friend of mine, who was also on vacation there.

My husband runs into people he know everywhere we go. The difference between me and him is that he never forgets a face. I’m sure I run into just as many people I know but just ignore them (and they me lol).

My husband is the same and I never see anyone anywhere. I've often wondered if it's a difference in our memories or our personalities: he looks to interact with people and I look to avoid it.

This happens to me often and with different people. I wonder why this happens.

I once picked up the phone to call my mom and must’ve timed it right because my phone didn’t ring but she was already on the other end because she had called at the exact same time.

I wanted to do a mosaic with old scrabble tiles on a coffee table. My artsy colleague was like, "do it! do it!" and gave me the motivation to buy 3,000 scrabble tiles on ebay.

Anyways, there I was, kind of regretting that I was sanding and gluing thousands of tiles, and the thought occurred to me to put some of my family members' names in the mosaic. The first six letters I picked out and set down spelled my grandmother's name in order. Granted, they're pretty common letters, but it just seemed very unlikely that would happen. I'm a statistician not normally impressed by woo.

So each guy was listening to you have intimate relations with the other guy?

I got a $100 bill for a bonus at a staff appreciation luncheon. I was so happy - i put it in my belt bag and set off for a long dog-walk to the marijuana shop! By the time i arrived, i had lost the $100 bill! I was so sad and ashamed. I never told anyone.

A couple of days later a neighbor returned from a visit to a friend who produces bud for the area shops. This guy GAVE me two ounces of theeee best bud! I couldn't believe it.

Coincidence? Fate? Crazy -

Went away to out-of-state college and dropped out after my freshman year (eventually finished up somewhere else). Through the years, it always bothered me. So went back to same college for graduate school. Just a few days before the graduation ceremony, showed my child the original acceptance letter from undergrad when they said, "dad, you are graduating the same day as the date as the letter (Dec 18)". So I graduated 44 years to the day the undergrad letter came in the mail. My mom cried both days.

Are you still in touch?

I had a broken leg and was on crutches so we had to take a cab to a restaurant. After dinner we got another cab. On the way back to the hotel I realized that the cab was our old family car. We asked the driver and his brother had bought the car as a wedding gift for him.

I had been dating a boy for just over a year in high school when his mom redecorated their living room. This included a large painting of a Scottish castle that was decorated for a holiday celebration. I asked her about it because it looked familiar and I thought my family had visited it when I was in 4th grade. I told her how we had gone to see the castle but it was closed that day to get ready for a celebration so we could only see the grounds. My favorite part was playing on the old cannons with a boy my age. Her face froze and she went running for her family photo album. She found pictures of their family trip to the castle. Sure enough she had pictures of her son playing on the cannons with me!

These are both impressive coincidences!

My brother took a class trip in 5th grade to Williamsburg, VA when we lived in Annandale,
VA in the late 1970s. Two summers later, we moved to central Ohio where we knew no one.

My brother came home from the first day of middle school to announce that he had classes with a girl who recognized him from the Williamsburg field trip! She was touring with her family and remembered him - it was her birthday trip. They didn’t get married but this girl was so nice to him and introduced him around telling everyone the story - my brother was instantly popular and welcomed and accepted.
