Roll Tide!

um. no..never. DC#1 going to UMD honors with merit. DC#2 don't know yet but it won't be Alabama.

Look, I wouldn't want to attend Bama and neither of my DCs would look at southern schools, but if I were in the above scenario, then yeah, I might be pushing Roll Tide.

why? There many colleges that don't cost $60K+ other than Bama. I can afford to send DC to a different oos if needed. It certainly won't be Bama.

Not everyone is so fortunate. So good that you have choices, but others might not.

? ok, but that ^PP replied to me specifically "Roll Tide". Also, there are other less expensive colleges out there than Bama.

Any kid who can get into top 25 colleges will have free rides to many schools, Bama wouldn't be a sensible choice unless they are getting recruited for football or want to rush for their parents fraternity.

If you had the stats to get into Amherst, you'd be paying $15k max at Bama. Even without a lick of merit or financial aid oos at Bama is about $52k

There are other schools where oos is about $50K.

A kid that can get into Amherst could get generous merit aid from LACs ranked in the thirties, maybe even the twenties. We're looking to spend 60k the first year, then pay the yearly increase.

And my kid who went to Amherst beat out the kids from lower ranked LACs for his spot in a coveted PhD program.

Sorry.

Having to attend grad school after LAC isn’t the flex you think it is.

This is bizarre. My spouse directs & therefore oversees admissions for a well-regarded PhD program. There are no favorite schools. The applicants are viewed based on what they have done, their recs, their demonstrated interest/likelihood to attend, how they write, how they interview. Many kids have entered the program form so-called no-name schools.

I dont think this Amherst to PhD story is at all true. It's not how it works.

Why do idiots even bother with these stupid prices anymore?

Just say no.

Your little Timmy or Suzy ain't getting anything better than what a satellite state school campus that costs 1/8th the price can teach. College is the most overrated trash ever.

Keep paying, dumb sheeple.

We all gotta acknowledge the reality of gray areas & conflicting truths. Do some grad schools love Amherst grads? Probably; but others don’t care. Is Bama a great choice for some well-off people who don’t want to pay $90k per kid per year? Absolutely; but others won’t like the vibe at any cost. Is $300k/yr a gamechanger? It depends on your priorities.

How do you know where the other applicants attended college? This is strange. I didn't even know that as an applicant to PhD programs, much less the parent of an applicant! 🚁

lol, true! I am always amused when people are like "LACs have the best representations in PhD programs!!!"...umm, that's not the flex you think it is.
