This is accurate.

I don’t think of people outside of the DMV area think of Georgetown University as being especially prestigious. It seems to be about at the level of Temple or Rutgers, but with more rats in the dorms, overall.

Georgetown grad here: This is a lie. GU is VERY well known outside of the DMV. It is considered one of the premier, elite institutions in the U.S. Some even mistakenly think it's part of the Ivy League, largely because they don't understand that Ivy League is a geographic/athletic designation and not a prestige one, technically. Though informally, Ivy League is used as a shorthand for a prestigious or elite university.

My kid did not like how urban GW’s campus was. It is really embedded in the city. Some people might like that. But she wanted more if a traditional campus.

AU is a pretty, suburban setting (though technically within the city limits).

Georgetown is classic, adjacent to a lively DC neighborhood, though the campus is in disrepair.

All offer great internship opportunities, and attract both US and international students .

Where are it’s Glover Park group houses? Even GW has some cool buildings and nearby hangouts. It’s just so oddly placed and not really attached to anything. That said, I would love to see them given the Homeland space and all those people relocated out of the city. That would help with their campus vibe and get rid of thousands of commuters who shouldn’t be in that part of NW. Their ability to compete with the other schools would be greatly enhanced at that point.

We also live 5 minutes from AU, and DD really wanted to tour the campus. It’s a very pretty, walkable campus that is one of two arboretums in DC. DD is a rising junior and interested in the arts, public policy, and environmental science. She’s not ready for touring lots of colleges but wanted to see a few local options. We were both very impressed with the campus, academics, and the potential for DC internships and job placement. Her top choice is UMDCP but she would strongly consider AU if she receives merit aid.

I attended AU back in the day and had a niece who graduated recently. I liked the campus - it was pretty, the students were politically engaged and it was a good school for my major. It was not my first choice but when I got a large merit scholarship, it sealed the deal. Back then, I thought Georgetown was snobby and I hated GW when I toured. I ended up transferring from AU - really because of social issues - and graduated from UMd. I loved my time at Maryland.

My niece had a generous merit scholarship and that also sealed the deal for her. She enjoyed the school and loved her time in DC. Unfortunately, COVID really interfered with one of AU’s biggest advantages: internships.

Is that the reputation of every AU student? A Bio major, too?

No, I'd definitely put the science kids in a different bucket (having worked with a number of them, I find the political orientation rep overstated anyway). Science at AU has improved a good deal since the university started investing in it more seriously in recent years. Terrific faculty, the new science center is wonderful, and Bio major is popular and strong. A talented student can do well there:

I’ve lived in DC for 40 years and have never heard anyone equate GT with the Ivy League. Ever. It’s ranked 24 in USNWR and 41 by Forbes. It is what it is, but not Ivy. League or not.

I thought Georgetown is known as GU not GT for people who live in DC.

AU is so over-priced with mediocre students and no alumni network. Not worth it. GU, GW and CUA are far better.

Are you on the waitlist at AU (if they have one)?

GWU and American on the way up, Georgetown on the way down. In 5 years they will basically be the same school.

+1. Someone bumped all of the old “DC university 1 vs DC university 2” threads yesterday evening. Really weird.
