DS preferred the GW urban campus, and did not get into Georgetown, which was academically the first choice for his major. So GW it is, and he's happy about it. He did not apply to American, because it sits on part of the old WWI chemical weapons dump, which was never properly disposed of - even though the army will tell you it's all clean.

One other thing I want to add: The DC area has a lot of colleges and if you are from out of town, you may just be focusing on these three when there are other schools that might fit the bill. For example, UMd is better than any of these three for engineering, computers and even some 'random' majors like journalism, criminal justice and speech pathology. Catholic doesn't get mentioned too much here but it's a nice school with a traditional campus and solid academics with way easier admissions than Georgetown. It's not an IR school but it has some very good programs, like social work. George Mason also has a nice, contained campus and a program for LD/ADHD kids and the school may be less expensive and easier admissions (and a bit less left leaning, if that's important) than AU.

Three different tiers - Gtown on top, GW, then AU.

The DC piece is central to the GW experience. Not necessarily true for the other two, which offer more traditional cloistered college experiences. I can’t imagine a student not having a strong preference for either GW or AU over the other.

+1 my kid wanted more of a traditional campus feel, so GW was out.

I don’t think of people outside of the DMV area think of Georgetown University as being especially prestigious. It seems to be about at the level of Temple or Rutgers, but with more rats in the dorms, overall.

I lived in Midwest, Deep South, and Mountain states before moving to DMV. Georgetown is considered a way better school than either Temple or Rutgers in all four areas I have lived in. Not sure about other areas.

AU grad...DC is very central to the experience. I would assume the same from GT. AU students are far from cloistered
