The internship support he's receiving is truly exceptional, leading him to secure an internship with a top finance firm right after his freshman year. As a PP my advice would be to have the kid visit the schools and interact with the professors and students. My DS sat in on a few lectures in spring both at UVA and VT before deciding.

You chose the safe path. Nothing wrong with that. Not everyone believes that they can compete and win. UVA’s McIntire school is for competitors and winners. Someone pull the starting salaries for Paplin vs. McIntire. McIntire = winning.

Geez

Oh good lord. Both things can be true. UVA is the more prestigious school but also the riskier option given no direct admit to the business programs. V Tech is also excellent and has different advantages. We're lucky in VA to have both schools.

For VA in-state drop UMD from both lists

Im sorry W&M for engineering ? Hard pass.

and Engineering should be UMD, VT. LOL at UVA.

UMD is #19 for Engineering

VT is #30
UVA is #39

That PP's list is soo funny.

But UVA is direct admit, VT is not. I would not risk any non-direct admit programs for my major of choice.

What? Pamplin is direct admit.

Pay is a good indicator. In BBA annual earnings net of debt payments, it is (national ranking shown in brackets):

UVA (3)
W&M (21)
UMD (35)
Virginia Tech (67)

In WSJ ranking of pay of top 20 schools for undergraduate pay in finance among public schools (they may not have a BBA), UVA is #1, W&M is #5, and UMD is #17. In Marketing, it is UVA #6, W&M #17.

See where the student gets in, then do the work on deciding. Such a roll of the dice for all of these.

The student should be building their list from the bottom-up. Get some other schools on the list as safeties - several.

VT now has its Alexandria campus near Amazon. VT is on the move, and growing in presence.

FWIW, UVa is 4th in the latest Poets and Quants ranking of undergraduate business schools:

1. USC
2. Georgetown
3. Wharton
4. UVa
5. Notre Dame (Mendoza is actually number one IMHO)
6. Cornell
7. NYU
8. Michigan
9. Wash U.
10. UNC

Virginia Tech did not make the list of 40 schools, but Elon and Rutgers did.

Appreciate the positive feedback from alumni and parents of kids who have attended or completed the UG program from any of these schools.

For info about UMD, it would be good for you to join the UMD Prospective Parent group on Facebook. There are lots of parents in that group who answer questions and also some staff. https://www.facebook.com/groups/umdparentsprospective

So happy to have a big ten option. It’s exciting to be a part of it.

that ranking site is kind of dumb.

"Schools must meet a minimum 10% response rate for their alumni data to fully count"

So, if their alumni didn't respond, then it's not ranked? Seems self selecting.

Yep. Just like Niche, which is crowd-sourced. Useless.

And UVA has two entire floors of its Arlington campus dedicated to business. That is where my dc picked up a business internship. UVA Darden has been there since 2017

^^ the Darden classes are in a Rosalyn high rise. Undergrads are welcome too

Here’s the info on the Darden school in Rosslyn. Buses run back and forth for those undergrads who need to go there to interview or take a class but my kid took the train. https://www.darden.virginia.edu/about/locations/dc

Wow, UVA booster had to jump right in with three consecutive posts, just to make sure she wasn’t being left out of the conversation! The insecurity is too funny.
