Tracy Chapman makes history

I don’t understand the “nails on a chalkboard” comment…she sings in a calm, mellow contralto. What exactly is so grating to that PP?

Agree 100%

I feel mixed about this.

If you don't have anything to add to a version (ie new/amazing arrangement or amazing voice)- please don't do a cover.

I am not into country, his voice is not amazing and I immediately flip the station when his version comes on.

Having said that I am thrilled and hopeful she is laughing all the way to the bank like Dolly was when Whitney redid her song.

Dolly didn’t just “laugh all the way to the bank.” She took the estimated $10 million she made in royalties off the Whitney version and invested in an office complex on a black neighborhood in Nashville is Whitney’s honor. She’s doesn’t just talk the talk.

Yeah, you can’t use Dolly as an example of anything negative or exploitative. She’s a do-gooder.

Thanks, I didn’t know that about Dolly. Let’s hope Tracy doesn’t feel as though she needs to donate to the Sons of Confederate Veterans!

You make her sound like a Miss Ann and not an ally.

I have no idea what you’re talking about.

PP to whom you responded and I was not shading Dolly. I adore her and she is a wonderful human for reasons you stated and far beyond.

She only revealed that a few years ago. Just fantastic.

I do remember hearing her say long ago that when she recorded her version (on the same day she wrote Jolene) she opened a bank account, and when Whitney’s version hit she bought the bank. 😀
