Ivy fetish?

Realistically for undergrad, it's UPenn, Duke, Columbia, Yale > UChicago, Northwestern, Johns Hopkins > Cornell, Vanderbilt

Yale > Columbia, Wharton > rest of Penn, Chicago, Northwestern, Duke > JHU, Cornell > Vanderbilt

Yale is not a step ahead of the rest anymore. They missed out on major STEM developments that HPSM all were central to, especially in CS. You see kids taking their state school for CS over Yale at a higher rate now. Columbia also isn't necessarily better than the rest because their US News and admissions scandal will probably hurt them a bit because going down to 18 will make a lot of HS kids looking at US News for the first time think Columbia is barely a T20. Of course in reality it's a great school but it's no better than UPenn, Yale, or Duke.

No. like most cities, there are good and bad areas. Chicago is no different. Lots of wealth in Chicago & the surrounding areas.

The city experiencing the most rapid decline is San Francisco, followed by Portland, then Seattle.

As a third party DMV grad it’s always funny to see people on here mix their dislike for Duke athletics with Duke as an academic institution. Yes, they beat my team like many of yours in lacrosse, basketball, etc. most years, but I don’t let that affect my understanding of Duke as a top academic destination. But DCUM will DCUM and continue to hate. Same goes for a number of schools that DCUM seems to particularly enjoy picking on

+1 always funny to see the Duke haters on here but once you've been on dcum for a while you already know the landscape.

Cry harder Dook is a safety school for anyone with actual talent or intellect. Full of ivy wannabes and second-rate students. Realistically on par with Boston College and Wake Forest but gets a boost from having "good" sports teams.

Yale is the only school in that first group that wouldn't just be a Northwestern peer.
Duke is overrated on DCUM despite the fake hatred. After a decade on the west coast, I view Duke differently now (and don't hold it in the same regard). It as a great non-Ivy private school with good sports name recognition along the lines of NW and Georgetown. Duke and NW are clearly not seen as close to that HYPS group nationally and internationally. Because both have Power 5 athletic departments and strong grad schools (they are also peers in many grad school disciplines, though NW's B-school is a differentiator), Duke and NW are probably best viewed as places that strive to be Stanford peers but that are far closer to one another.

Stanford and MIT (and to a slightly lesser degree Harvard, Cal, and even CMU) have separated themselves in CS-related STEM. Yale is now putting a ton of $$ into STEM though (and they have a ton). It would be a mistake in my opinion to turn down one of the top schools with a growing and developing CS department, if you can afford it anyway.

Why are people boning on about Yale, Stanford and Duke when OP asked about Northwestern?

So tired of the college admissions pundits who need to add their unrelated 2 cents.

Extremely Underrated school

More compelling than duke and Penn if we are being honest

Bad weather, hypercompetitive student body, strong emphasis on Greek life - not that great

I also spent time in SV and being frank, no one cared about Yale there. Columbia was even a bigger draw. To each their own I guess.

You are all a bunch of weirdos, seriously, for arguing incessantly about what “tiers” all of these schools belong in. You really need another hobby.
