Not sure what to make of it, DS likes it but also likes a number of other schools more. He's considering EDing for "strategic purposes" since it seems a bit easier to get into than some of his higher choices. Is Northwestern more akin to schools like UPenn, Duke, Columbia, and Yale, or more akin schools like Cornell, Vanderbilt, Johns Hopkins, and UChicago?
Yale is the only school in that first group that wouldn't just be a Northwestern peer. Duke is overrated on DCUM despite the fake hatred. After a decade on the west coast, I view Duke differently now (and don't hold it in the same regard). It as a great non-Ivy private school with good sports name recognition along the lines of NW and Georgetown. Duke and NW are clearly not seen as close to that HYPS group nationally and internationally. Because both have Power 5 athletic departments and strong grad schools (they are also peers in many grad school disciplines, though NW's B-school is a differentiator), Duke and NW are probably best viewed as places that strive to be Stanford peers but that are far closer to one another.
I also spent time in SV and being frank, no one cared about Yale there. Columbia was even a bigger draw. To each their own I guess.
