This comment made me laugh. Thank you! |
Seriously. Enough already. Lawyers are at the top of the food chain in DC. Spend a week here and youâll have figured that out. |
You bumped a 2 year old thread to say this. |
Female Big Law lawyer here. It's a hard job. Yes, there are many parts of the job that I like and it caters to my strengths and how I am wired. But I would not want this life for my children. |

Leaving govt after a long long time - newly empty nester (woman) - have non equity partner offers
Is this worth trying? I donât need the money - it would certainly be nice but I think there are jobs I could get that would pay closer to a govt salary and lifestyle would be okay. |
This doesn't really say much about the food chain in a town overrun with lawyers. There are levels and gradations. Some generic biglaw partner is not the same as someone who has cycled in and out of high level DOJ or White House Counsel type roles or someone with high level political contacts parked at a law firm. A generic biglaw partner job really isn't all that impressive or noteworthy by itself. |
Questioning my choices. -doctor |
Completely depends on law firm - what does NEP mean, is there a path to equity, what is the pay and how much if any depends on originations, what is the expectation on you to bring work in, how do they support laterals, do they have work for you, etc etc And depends on you and what you want! |
T14 lawyer grad here making 85K full time in office; WFH doctor DH works 3 days/ week and makes 380. You never know. I got burnt out as a 2L summer associate lol |
Are you willing to share the area of law in which you practice ? |
My dad is retired now but was a successful big law partner and one of my brothers is even more successful in finance. Another sibling also very successful in finance. My dad told us not to be lawyers, lol. |
If sheâs already an empty nester and doesnât need the money she might not care about oath to equity. But definitely worth figuring out what work they have for you and if youâll be expected to bring in business. Sending you to conferences to schmooze and talk and hang out govt credentials out to entice clients is one thing, but if theyâre gojng to base your comp on what you actually pull in (eat what you kill), that may not be worth the stress for you. But some firms already have the clients but need the expertise to fill out an existing practice or something like that â this could be a very cushy path to retirement for you. |
My DH says the same to our kids. It has made us comfortable financially, but it has been really hard on family life. DH wonders if he should have done a medical specialty instead. |
PP here considering a firm, for the offer I think Iâm leaning towards there will be some business development but more in terms of using my expertise to expand work with existing clients and then having me oversee that work in an area where I have a lot of expertise (niche regulatory practice). |
I make more than this as a senior in-house lawyer (including base, bonus & equity). But not as much as equity partners. Would never go back to the law firm grind. |
