Another Sidwell college counselor head quits

Tuition keeps going up because 1) demand for good faculty increases making the market for good teachers tighter...pay up or lose them and 2) parents rightly demand more - new buildings, more programs, etc, which you know, requires money.

Why rightly? Isn’t it just a facilities arms race?

But an influx of top-down energy that brings creativity, warmth, and more outreach to/relationships with students would be welcome.

We all know it has been a tough year and another in the constantly changing climate, but the current process lacks any feeling of CCO working as a team with the students. It has never felt like the students have someone at CCO who is in the trenches with them, in their corner helping out and/or cheering them on. They are perfectly nice, but it's almost as if the primary expectations were only to make sure list has a safety and turn in documents. There has been no CCO-initiated one-on-one communications with students as decisions have come out and no outreach to have meetings to give next-steps advice on strategy based on those decisions (or even a congratulations on your acceptance!). It's a "call us because we won't call you" (but "we're here for you! yay!") relationship with students.

You can't fault them if none of this was expected....but it's a shame that it isn't. These kids work hard and wouldn't it be nice for them to have someone who actually knew them and actively let them know they have their back in this process.

Yup -- exactly -- and all this has been true at SFS for years -- way before COVID.

Because people who are paying so much for school want to make sure their kids have whatever resources and opportunities they can.

Several peer schools have kept tuition increases to 3%, kept teachers and have excellent college placement so I don’t buy it.

Which “peer” schools?
1. Where are these schools located? Hint: DC is the only acceptable answer because…COL and land values
2. What are these schools’ 2023-24 tuition rates? Is lunch included in the tuition?
3. How do their facilities compare to Sidwell’s (be honest)?

Why should facilities matter? Will your students have a better education and college placement because the gym is better? NOPE.

You know this isn’t a debate about facilities providing better college placement. It’s about providing clean and comfortable surroundings for students (which all children deserve). My oldest son attended a crumbling, roach and rat infested WotP DCPS before attending Sidwell. He will tell you that Sidwell’s facilities alone made his educational experience 1000% better. After he saw the inside of Walls (pre-COVID), he wouldn’t even consider it. Luckily, he has parents who could afford private high school.

However, I agree that Sidwell’s tuition has gotten out of hand. I’m glad I’m FINALLY done paying it. My daughter attends a much more reasonably priced Catholic school.

Lol—You know these two schools are not Sidwell’s peers. Potomac is located somewhere in Virginia, and Maret’s facilities leave a lot to be desired (including adequate onsite sports fields). Plus, a generation ago, Maret was the school where you landed if you were counseled out of Sidwell/STA/NCS. Those three schools have always educated the political and financial elite. That’s why they’re the real Big 3.

Potomac land values are much lower; Maret facilities aren't comaparable to SFS, which is why they are pissing off other neighborhoods across NW DC.

People who think that Maret and Potomac are Sidwell’s peer institutions are clueless. Keep dreaming!
