Advanced Academic Programs (AAP)
Totally agree. TJ takes far far too much time and energy from FCPS leaders. And does about 1/3 of the school not even live in Fairfax County? FCPS is already to big and complex. Time to cut back and focus on the basics. Closing TJ should be up for discussion. |
I think we should make it a lottery and just stop talking about it. The entitled elitists have been throwing a ridiculous temper tantrum that is damaging to students. Time to move on. |
Spreading more lies |
Better idea: work on the admissions process in the background while people bicker about it and change it as necessary without spending needless public resources and time on the matter. People will never agree on it, but the solution to “people are mad” can’t be to blow things up. |
Yes, the biggest problem with the recent admission changes is it can't be as easily gamed like the old system where all you had to do was sign up for prep. |
What an utterly asinine characterization of the prior merit-based admissions. Now the perverse incentive is to pull your kid out of an AAP center and send them to a low-performing middle school like Poe or Whitman where they may not learn as much but have a better chance of being in the top 1.5%. |
Any changes that were developed “in the background” and then unveiled would immediately be attacked as having been secretive, developed “behind closed doors,” and lacking transparency. The debate on the merits of the changes might be deferred but then the debate on internal FCPS processes (as a proxy for the debate on the merits of the changes themselves) would chew up just as much time. It would not necessarily “blow up” TJ if the school were repurposed as a full-time Academy or became a community school again. FCPS would gain hundreds of additional seats for county students, and it could be the catalyst for a long overdue review of boundaries county-wide. And, since TJ would still have nicer facilities than many schools, returning TJ to use as a community school might even prompt people to relocate to that part of the county. |
It's much ado about nothing. It all makes very, very little difference. This non issue is being driven by some bitter tiger moms who are trying to destroy TJ. |
+100 The cheaters had a good thing going, people brought their kids from far and wide to FFX to cheat into TJ at the taxpayers expense. It's over. As a taxpayer, I would rather shut it down than go back. |
Agree, I also define merit as being able to purchase the test answers for my kid and it's so annoying that you can't easily buy admissions now. |
| So apparently Langley and Westfield administrators were also not advising students of their commended status. Assume some students found out on their own, especially at Langley, but this will undoubtedly expand the scope of the current AG investigation. |
| DC attended Westfield last year (class of 2022). DC said National Merit commendations were notified last year (he was one). Got letter/certificate in homeroom as well as announced on the schools YouTube channel. Westfield has a new director of student services since then so not sure if that plays into it. |

Dear parents of Commended students who are throwing an tantrum:
I’m so SO sorry that your child was not a NMSF. Signed, Parent who is laughing at what how the same people who are are screaming “MERIT” also want their child to get a cookie for a not-so-amazing score. |
Any gaps will be made up by supplementing with time and resources that would previously be spent on prep. And Poe/Whitman gets an active and engaged student and family. Win/win. |
No offense, but the few students from Poe/Whitman now at TJ are just not good students. Feel sorry for them and hope they can improve. |
