Dry January 2023 Thread

One day at a time, as they say.

I bought some N/A wine and had friends over to play cards last night -- didn't even remember to pour a glass. Iced tea got me through just fine, and everyone but me was drinking.

A friend of mine who tapered down last year from 4-6 beers a night to 1-2 said after a while you want it less. I think he's right.

Hope he's right.

Night 5 last night and got my best night of sleep in a long time. I was very tempted to have a drink last night due to stress from a divorce but resisted.

I had a few drinks last night. Not a great feeling. Restarting today.

Proud of you. You’ve got this

Fourth year in row. It's a great re-set. This may be the year I stop/sharply curtail drinking. Noticed as I'm getting older that I don't feel so great even after a moderate amount of alcohol (1-2 glasses of wine). Probably time to consider drinking as a very occasional thing to do at a nice dinner out or vacation.

I'm in peri-menopause and drinking and hot flashes are unpleasant.

Good for you. A slip is not a relapse. Keep moving forward.

I have been alcohol-free this week. This morning, I discovered that I was out of foundation, and ... maybe a little Dry January miracle .. my skin looks fine without it. Hmmmmm ....

I’m doing ok so far! I’ve done a few in the past, and knowing I can do it certainly helps. I like reading r/sober on Reddit for inspiration

That’s ok. You had four straight days without it. Start again today. You can do it!

I wonder what the average number of days people make it without a drink before caving.

It isn't easy. I've got my NA wine, which I'm using to get me through that 5pm-dinner-prep time when I would normally crack a bottle of chardonnay and down a couple glasses without thinking.

So far so good, but I miss it.

This is my 3rd dry January (I usually do 6 weeks bc I have a mid-Feb birthday).

I think this gets a little easier every year, just because I know from prior successful years that I *can* do it.

My strategy this year is to floss and brush my teeth right after I put the kids to bed, as nighttime drinking (and snacking) is my issue. I don't usually have a drink with dinner. It's easier for me to say no to drinks/ food if I've already brushed and put in my nightguard.

I am pretty worried about tonight and tomorrow.

I do like Health-Ade lemon ginger kombucha in a wine glass as a relax mode sub.

Same. I have a Friday night routine at home, and then I usually go out for late lunch and a drink or two with my husband.

I might be white knuckling it through the weekend. But I want to stick with it.
