PSA:Have your kid go outside now to see if they really want a cold, northern college

Ditto, I don’t think people understand it’s not just a few weeks of colder weather than the DMV. I went to school in upstate NY too and while I loved it, it was always cold and snowy nearly the entire school year. I remember we had snow finals week one year. I went to visit in the summer once and was shocked that it actually got warm there! It could snow (and often did) anytime from October to April every year.

I, too, went to college in upstate NY. I was too busy studying and having fun to really pay that much attention to the weather. Over time, you get so used it that you don't even notice the cold.

+1 I went to college in Massachusetts and college was a lot of fun and so busy. Yep it was cold but it didn't seem like a huge deal at that age. I still love New England (live in DMV now)

My kid is currently obsessed with a school on Michigan’s UP. I am not against it, but we definitely need to get her much better winter gear.

My kid goes to school in MI and went to boarding school in MA. He said MI is another level of cold from New England, and basically never wears coats here in DC anymore. Today might be an exception though.

Agree both can be freezing, but Detroit is a different kind of cold.

Ok, but Detroit isn’t on the UP

Too funny. The winters in the UP, especially where Michigan Tech is located, are overall much more snowy and colder than anything in SE Michigan. The geographic ignorance of Americans is once again on full display here.

There are schools other than Michigan tech on the UP

I attended U. of Michigan for four years and I really hated it. It is too cold for me and not much to do in the winter, everything has to be indoors with the exception of skiing, ice hockey, ice fishing. The sky is always gloomy. One of my kids is attending U. of Miami and another one is attending UCLA. They love the warm weather, outdoor activities, and the women there. Women in Miami and LA are much better looking than in cold places. YMMV.

Yes there are of course, but I just assumed Tech would be the one the PP was referring to.

Northern colleges are obsolete and depressing. The only reason they became engineering, law and medicine powers was because of the auto and post WW2 manufacturing boom (and the hot and humid south was unlivable). But now the rust belt is a bleak and decaying economic dead zone and modern air conditioning and refrigeration has made the sun belt comfortable year-round.

“Attended” huh? So you had to transfer or failed out and now you hold a grudge?

And that's the best reason to choose a college - for the women

Different era. You were just oblivious. Teens now notice the cold because they have social media and 24/7 see reminders of peers in warm climate colleges wearing skimpy clothes, enjoying the sun, the outdoors, and palm trees.

It's important for both men and women because they could very easily meet their life partners in college.
