Florida
This last one I just do not believe. No way it’s true. |
1. Florida taxes you elsewhere to make up the difference, no state has a free ride. Plus the tolls, they love tolls down there. In fact, all no tax states do, if you think about it. 2.
3. HAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHA okay sure. Ask them how they feel about DeSantis and you'll find out real quick. |
Floridian here. Sure, if you ask, people will tell you. The point (I believe) that PP is making is that no one tends to ask here. That's true in my circle too. I don't ask, they don't tell. It rarely if ever comes up in conversation. It's a stark contrast from living in DC. One of many. |
Its almost as if DC is home to politics thus people are going to ask. |
No way which is true? That I dont know (or care) how my fellow classparents vote, or that people aren't generally happier down here? |
I am another Floridian here and where I live - in a liberal city - people def talk about politics. At least people we know. Most people I know hate DeSantis but we're in a bubble in my city. |
And yet, people continue to move there in flocks while many of the states you likely consider acceptable are the ones that are losing population. So...maybe it's just you |
That's the point. It hasn't come up. Politics does not lead. I am thrilled about it after 15 years in DC. It is lovely and freeing to be friends and friendly with people. Just focusing on what we have in common- doing stuff for the classroom, getting together on weekends, organizing a beach visit after school. Life. |

I'm going to say the unpopular thing that I know many have privately thought.
We were miserable in DC during the pandemic. Schools closed, rec space and playgrounds shuttered, challenges of winter, businesses and people closing and leaving. Many Floridians had the CHOICE of getting kids back to in person school quickly, living relatively normal lives, not being cooped up inside during cold weather. My best friend in Ft Lauderdale had her kids back in person school by Fall 2020, was able to live pretty normally, and was vaccinated 2 months before we were able to get appts in DC. We lived on different planets. I was jealous. We all ended up in the same place- vaxxed and boosted. Yet the road to get there was so vastly different. There is no prize for being more miserable... |
Yeah, people in DC just don't seem to understand that, in most places in the country, people have no interest in sharing their politics with you, or hearing your political opinions. They have other stuff to talk about. So many people in the DC area are completely one-note. My parents live in a quiet beach town south of St. Augustine and north of Daytona. I can see the appeal of the laid back lifestyle. I'm a big fan of Naples, though. Americans tend to vote with their feet, which is why northerners have been moving south for decades now. |
We also get hurricanes but, I agree it is less than but, still. Why argue about personal preferences? |
This isn’t true at all. The higher taxes in high tax states are driven by large pension liabilities and a more expansive social welfare system. Food stamps are more generous in NY, NJ has a police and fire station in every town and countless government employees who will receive a pension etc. Some states truly are better at managing their finances and are able to have lower taxes. |
Right. We have friends with kids around the same age down in Florida. While Floridians were prioritizing the well-being of their children, by getting them back to school as soon as possible, people around here were prioritizing the feelings of the anxious hypochondriacs who seem to populate this area. I think, at the end of the day, so many people on a website like DCUM are so shrill about Florida is because they know, deep down inside, Floridians were right about how to respond to the pandemic, and they were wrong. Every time I visited down there, people were horrified at how we treated our kids up here. |
np You can always visit other states/countries if you want snow etc |
It's not like the DC area is some sort of winter wonderland. You get a little snow, but winters are pretty bleh, just cold and gray with nothing really to do outside. It's not like we're in Colorado. I don't mind the climate around here, but it's not really the place to live if you're into winter and activities like skiing. |
