What is going on with TJ admissions this year?

Less the bottom-half do impact the school by some measures. For example look at the SOL scores. Almost all schools in FCPS had some progress upwards

For TJHSST the pass advanced rate in Geometry went down 31% from 73% to 42%

Biology and Algebra 2 Pass advanced level went down (but not that much 13 and 10%) from 66% to 53% and from 63% to 53%

These test and results do not matter for people who believe that the best way to find in-nate talent is via un-proctored and un-verified essays. So yes, overall for the top spots/test nationwide the bottom-half does not matter but for the average scores etc. they will.

Do you have a source for these pass rates? I was going to say you've buried the lede, but then I saw it was actually at the start of your post.
For TJ to have a 42% pass rate in geometry doesn't speak well for their teaching, or they are admitting very poor performing students who shouldn't be there. They generally didn't accept kids at TJ who hasn't taken geometry, so 73% could be 8/11 students passing. 42% out of more than 100 says something.

I have not looked at the SOLs for TJ but you can google the SOL results for 2022 and sort them by school to see the results. They normally include year or twos past results for comparison. I know I looked at my sons school a few weeks back,.

I don't think Curie is a big thing in Fairfax. They were mostly teaching to Loudoun students, and was the bulk of Loudoun admits to TJ.

Looked it up, and you are right the pass advanced rate is way down. Surprised to see TJ had kids taking algebra 1 SOL as well, which dropped from 70 to 29.
TJ had 100% passing SOLs in math subjects.

It’s about half and half when you look at their admits to 2022, 2023, and 2024.

All I know is most of their students get into TJ, so worth every $$$$!!

You do not know this. It is not known how many kids go to these classes, but I am guessing it is much less than half that get in.

The ad that Curie put in the paper a few years ago claimed that over 30% of the TJ entering class were their clients. I can only imagine what percentage came from the other prep centers. I mean do any kids get in without prep these days?

That is a different statement than 30% of kids who go to Curie get in.

I don't have access to that information, but I'd assume the percentage is much higher.

Under the new system yes they do.

There have always been plenty of kids who get into TJ without prep - and by prep, I mean "expensive boutique enrichment programs specifically targeted to the TJ admissions process", not "general academic enrichment".

But in the last few years before the changes to the admissions process, prep had become fairly ubiquitous within certain communities. There were approximately 195 students of South Asian descent admitted to TJ's class of 2024 (source: the yearbook) and Curie claimed 133 in that year. Curie's named list is 100% South Asian.

The South Asian community, of course, is not the only one where families interested in expensive prep exists. Simple extrapolation would suggest that a very strong percentage of TJ's Class of 2024 families engaged in this behavior prior to admission, unless one believes that it is only the South Asian community that makes this level of investment (which I do not).

No need to guess it's above 30%.

But that's from just Curie. I'd guess If you were to include the others, it would be closer to 90%.

30% of TJ's class went to Curie is different than 30% of Curie got into TJ. I think it is a much lower percentage than that(and someone on here suggested the number was 90%), and that Curie has nearly 1000 students in its TJ classes, though this would give them almost half the applications, so maybe not.

Could have changed the test...why did they not?

also another question...

Does Curie also help in Math Olympiad, Spelling Bee, Geography Science Olympiad, admissions to STEM Phd programs. Tech entrepreneurship? asking for a non-Asian friend.
