Administration health officials had once hoped to authorize first shots for young children at the beginning of this year. But scientific setbacks and broader practical concerns within the Food and Drug Administration have slowed progress, the people with knowledge of the matter said.

Now, regulators are leaning toward postponing any action until the early summer, arguing that it would be simpler and less confusing to simultaneously authorize and promote two vaccines to the public, rather than green-lighting one on a faster timetable and the other down the road.

So they are hesitant to approve Moderna because of some sort of made up "confusion" even though Moderna and Pfizer were approved at different times back in 2020? Makes no sense and incredibly frustration to read knowing that Moderna can theoretically be ready first but has to wait for Pfizer to catch up.

Doesn't it give you pause that several European countries have pulled Moderna for use in people under 30? I know they are conducting a trial, but the size is again so small that less common adverse events won't be detected until post-market observations (just like it happened in the much larger adult trials). I had no issue giving my 9yo Pfizer in November, but no way would I give this Moderna shot to an under-5yo.

It should give all parents some pause.

They either need to commit to it or tell people it's basically not happening anytime soon/ever.

Totally agree- this is my big issue with it too. If an effective vaccine for the under 5s just isn’t going to happen anytime soon, so be it! But the CDC needs to actually update its childcare-specific guidance to eliminate quarantines and not recommend masking. I’m convinced that the people making these decisions must be a bunch of old people with no recent experience of having to use daycare. Just a total lack of recognition with what parents have been dealing with for two years, especially in super-blue areas that interpret any guidance the most literally/cautiously.

This has been one of the main problems throughout this entire pandemic.

This is/was one of the issues I have with Fauci. So out of touch.

And nobody at the CDC seems to be advocating for our kids. Does nobody at the agency have children??

Fauci is what, almost 80? Of course he doesn’t have young kids. I assume a lot of our top public health officials don’t. They have no idea what it’s been like.

Doesn’t he have adult children though? Maybe even his grandchildren (if any) would be older.

I think the problem with the CDC is that it’s main mission is to reduce diseases. Above all else. The WHO’s mission is more broad so they probably have people there thinking about other aspects of things like masking young kids, etc.

DP. I don't think this is correct. It was recently (Feb 2022) approved for 6-11 in europe. I didn't do a deep search, but don't see the 2021 approval for 11-17 or "under 30" being pulled.

Our toddlers have already had covid this year. Vaccine will be about 6 months too late.

NP who is not banking on the vaccine. I won’t even give it to my under 5 child if it’s approved. My issue, as many others have stated, is that I can basically do whatever I want at this point but my child in daycare is constantly kept home for mild colds and Covid quarantines. It has been brutal this past few months and really should not continue because the science doesn’t back up shutting down classrooms for Covid cases at this point.

You people need to learn to google. It wasn’t “pulled,” just recommended against due to rare cases of heart inflammation.

That is insane. Our public policy leaders (especially in this area) have consistently put such an unfair burden on our kids throughout this pandemic.

I agree. But as public health experts, it should be there job to think about ALL demographic groups. There should be clear guidance coming down from the federal level that many of these extreme measures are not necessary for daycares.

I think it is an emotional decision by doctors who see the (small number of) little kids that are severely sick from COVID and feel obligated to protect them. The pandemic gives them the tools to do things they think are protecting these kids, like calling for masks and quarantines. Of course, these tools would never even be considered if everyone including adults had the same rates of severe disease and death from COVID as young children do. Many of these doctors may be older men who are used to having a spouse who can stay at home with the kids. Remember when the AAP insisted parents should roomshare (but not bedshare!) with their infants until 12 months? This is not a group of people that are in tune with the realities of families with young children. They probably think if parents managed in 2020 (by quitting their jobs), they can keep managing indefinitely.

I think you’re right. “They’ve been treading water for two years, what’s another few weeks or months?”

When in reality, a lot of people are suffering— whether it’s insane daycare measures, anxiety/fear about their young children, inability to work caused by either of those things, etc. So it doesn’t seem like “just a few more weeks/months.”
