| I am neutral on masking at this point but this thread reflects a small minority of parents, from what I can see in real life. I teach in a DCPS Title I school with 100% AA population and I estimate 75% of kids are still masking. Parents mask at drop off/pick up, too. And my children go to another DCPS that’s not Title I and a large percentage are still masking there. I don’t have a dog in this fight but this thread is not where the majority of parents are, from what I can tell. |
Sure but most of the kids also likely grow up in single parent homes and often in poverty. Their parents made bad choices so I don’t think we should necessarily be copying what they do with masking their children. |
94 percent of school districts in America don't require masks for kids. If that was causing a problem, do you think maybe we would have heard about it by now? People who think kids still need to mask should explain when they expect masks to no longer be necessary. They should also explain why they know more than the CDC and the Department of Health both of which say masks are unnecessary. |
They'll say masks can go when coronavirus disappears completely (which is never going to happen). |
I’m firmly in thr mask optional camp. But I don’t think anyone owes you an explanation for why they continue to choose masking for themselves and their children. As long as they aren’t trying to require masks for your child, then their choice does not effect you. |
That's the whole point of this thread. Many children in DC are still required to make. Some even outdoors just as an extra "fck you" to any rational, scientific thought. |
The racism and misogyny is so strong in your post, wouldn’t want to copy any of your parenting choices. So scared for your poor poor children. |
Maybe a small minority in DC. The very vast majority of the country doesn't mask kids in schools anymore. Also, not a small minority in all parts of DC. Our DCPS is 80+% unmasked. It's also highly vaccinated. Parts of the DC population seem to prefer masking over vaccines, which betrays a high level of misinformation about what actually has a significant impact in terms of lowering Covid risk. |
My DCPS school is over 75/80% masked. This is WOTP. So I’m not sure there is the misinformation problem. |
The thread is about mask *requirements*, or at least is titled that way. I don't think the issue for most is that some choose to mask and some don't. The issue is that for something like 70% of charters (which covers like a third of DC schoolkids), they do not have a choice in whether to unmask. They are still required to do so. Some even outdoors (against all reason). |
Interesting. I'm glad this is not the case at our school. You will ask: why do I care? Because the more kids are unmasked, the more it feels like normal school for the kids. I'm fine with a few kids still wearing masks for whatever reason, and I hope nobody gives them a hard time for doing so, but it's nice to see most of the school back to normalcy for the kids. |
Why do you think there isn't a misinformation problem just because this is WOTP? |
Anyone ignorant enough to wear a cloth mask has to be assume to be ignorant enough to not get vaccinated. |
I don’t see anyone in cloth masks. They are all in KF94 and KN95. Also a highly vaccinated school. I don’t know why you are so concerned about other peoples choices. I guess it burns your eyes to see it |
Oh, I'm sure those kids are all in their KN95s and KF94... With air leaks all around, of course, since no kid is wearing an actually tightly fitted respirator that would actually provide the protection the parents believe they do. |
