1 - Avoiding Nerf Gun Battles in the Hallways
2 - Locked Bathrooms
3 - Going to the Bathroom and watching others give stick and poke tattoos
4 - Fights
5- Classmates pulling fire alarms
6 - Bathrooms without soap
7 - Smell of pot while walking to / from school
8 - Going to class and there not being any adults there
9 - Going to class and there being a bunch of kids there who are not in the class
10 - Having an assembly to talk about school rules and knowing it is a joke and will never be enforced

So, middle school. Great attempt to slam deal tho

We live in the suburbs, but this is literally nothing like my kids middle school, omg are you serious?

Please. I went to middle school at a "good" school in Fairfax. This is par for the course.

This is egregious for deal. I had multiple kids I don’t teach curse me out today.

We live in Frederick County and it's certainly nothing like described above.

How would I know what goes on in my son's middle school in Frederick County?? Because he tells me and I am an involved parent. The same way that Deal parents know what goes on at Deal.

Yes, I am such a parent. I have two kids at Deal, they come home and tell me all about what happened all day, and based on that I would say that Deal is nothing like what’s described above.

As a Deal teacher that’s actually refreshing because that means we’re shielding many of the kids from the disruptions.

DC the other morning before school at Deal: “I’m so thirsty, but I’m not going to drink anything because then I’d have to go to the bathroom.” They’re not allowed to during class and the four minutes between classes aren’t enough time due to the locked bathrooms and crowded hallways. So DC chooses dehydration instead. This is a child who also has sports practice there after school.

I went to a private middle school and encountered none of this

+1. My kids haven’t encountered these things at their private middle school either. They’re intrigued by our neighbor’s stories of fights at our zoned-middle school and couldn’t believe it when they heard condoms were found in the bathroom.

Your kids are growing up sheltered.

Thankfully.

Or, PP's kid is like mine, who told me none of this until he went to private high school and realized that stuff isn't normal and expected in school and doesn't happen everywhere. Though he does say everyone should have to go through Deal as a rite of passage.

Wow if it’s that bad why do so many parents on this forum cluster in Deal feeder schools? Maybe they should consider other alternatives like title one schools
in communities they purchased homes in? These school are under enrolled which equals smaller class sizes and an opportunity for families to create PTOs and increase opportunities through securing grants and programming. So over trying to make decisions about elementary school based on a feeder school that is most likely over rated there are so many better alternatives

Not so simple, PP, above. Peer group is critical in middle school for most kids. My somewhat lazy and distracted, but very capable, 6th grader only works hard because most of her peers are strong, motivated students. Put her in a Title 1 program with many needy kids who struggle academically and she'd surely cruise.

We were in a Title 1 school before moving to a school that feeds Deal.
The behavior problems that we encountered in the Elementary School were significant. We moved schools to buy some time before encountering them again in Middle School. It is one thing for a tween to process and navigate this - another for a 7 year old.

With this list how is Deal any different that the other Title One schools. It sounds like the kids in the "better peer social circle" are doing the same things that other students do in the "At Risk" groups. Except the stakes are higher for these students because they do not have the financial means or educated parents to ensure that they do not become a statistic.

We all know what the PP meant when they talked about needy and academically low students, and how they were not good enough for their childs "peer group"
