12:03 here again. GDS and Maret also had extraordinarily good results in admissions to Harvard this year. Maybe if I had mentioned GDS and Maret with NCS in my earlier posts I would not have been accused of NCS-boosting by a PP! I mentioned NCS alone just because their numbers this year were remarkably high. |
I'm a sidwell parent and I'm confused about the claim that Harvard admitted two students, one waitlisted. You are not admitted if you are waitlisted. Does the original claim that 13 kids go in to ivies - had heard 7 - include kids who are still on the waitlist? |
I am not the PP who claimed that Harvard admitted two students, one waitlisted. However, I can state for a fact that Harvard admitted only one Sidwell student this April. I don't know anything about a waitlisted Sidwell student, but "waitlisted" usually does not mean "admitted" unless one is taken off the waitlist and offered a spot in the fall. |
"Of course there are cases where a person, alum or not, has given donations significant enough to put the his/her child in the development category"
What is "significant enough" for HYP, other Ivies, or Williams/Amherst/Middlebury? |
No one outside of development knows for sure, but my best guess is $5 million or more PLUS the potential for more. |
I can't believe it would take $5 million. That's a huge gift. |
Believe it. It does take a huge gift for your child or garndchild to become a development case. |
What's the benefit of admitting a legacy if they aren't a big donor. I don't get that. And I'm someone who really hopes my alma mater will admit my son. |
It makes the parents feel better. The Daily Princetonian had an article that 12% of the admits for the 2014 class are legacies. That's not a huge number -- but it's not a bad number either. |
That's not really an answer. Any body whose kid gets in to Princeton is going to feel better. I can't believe that legacy admits are not motivated largely by $. |
Well, of course the legacy Ivy admits are motivated largely by $$$$ and the expectation that if an Ivy lets a kid in -- the Ivy parents would be more apt to give than non-Ivy parents.
I really dislike when people lump athletic admits in with the legacies. Legacies don't have to have talent (just the right birthparents). Athletes have to be Division I material and are required to practice for 3 or more hours a day w/o being paid. And, too, Ivies don't give athletic scholarships. |
So let's let all the Landon jocks in, no questions asked! |
A previous poster said the giving history of a parent is not considered when admitting the legacy applicant. Even if you are legacy, I assume that you would have to be an outstanding candidate. With all the 2400 4.5 gpa kids out there, legacy serves as a differentiator when deciding between superb candidates. So legacies not only have talent, they have, well legacy. |
Does anyone know how many kids got in to college based on athletics from schools including GDS, Sidwell, Maret, St. Albans? |
Some legacy are let in with scores that wouldn't get them in if they weren't legacies. |
