What do you love/not love about SSSAS?

I'll be sure to share mine when we've had some more experience with the school.

I'm not an SSSAS parent, but when I read about the things that you mention: progressive environment, screen time in LS, bullying in MS and LAX culture in HS, I put it all together and come up with - a lazy, incompetent administration that has gotten away from a mission of educating kids.

Boom!

Their child is in 8th grade and dealing with real social challenges at SSSAS (so much do that the family applied out for high school). The school seems nice on the surface and we were impressed during the admissions process, but I think there are some real issues in terms of the school environment.

Can you elaborate? What kind of school environment issues?

Bullying, social pressure, and cliquey behavior that excludes some kids. That was my takeaway from the conversation.

Fabulous education, fabulous teachers, fabulous environment. I was an enthusiastic school volunteer. However, a few years in, the focus of the school started to change. Grades were eliminated until 6th grade, and even at that time, the teachers were very generous with their grading, and homework was minimal. (We all want to believe that our child is brilliant, but my child put in zero effort, rarely turned in assignments on time, and was on the honor roll.) I just expected a more rigorous curriculum from the school. The math curriculum is at the level (or below) of public schools, and the writing instruction is average. Bullying also became a problem in middle school (from students that had been attending the same school together for almost 7 years), and there were no consequences for extremely cruel children that went so far as to encourage self-harm. We had mixed feelings about leaving as we became close with many of the families, but we decided that the best choice for our child was to leave.

I call troll. There isn’t an “honor roll” at SSSAS.

There absolutely is an honor roll and has been for years. They don’t call it that but you obviously know what posters are referring to

Exactly! I’d go further to say it’s even worse bc the admin is fully aware of the bullying, cliques, emphasis on brands, mean girl behavior about brands, blatant use of phones throughout the day, competitive behavior about who has what phone, etc, yet admin does nothing.

Mean girl behavior about brands? I assume this is high school since the middle school kids wear a uniform? And competitive behavior about phones? What a nightmare…

There is no uniform in MS, only in LS.

They have policies promoting diversity equity and inclusion - none of which entail grading a black student differently than a white student. Seriously that’s some Fox News propaganda. Ugh. I’m embarrassed parents that dumb are part of the school community and even more embarrassed one of them is actively posting here.

St Stephens is a fabulous school. Clearly not for those who want to live in a Trumpy, conservative bubble however.

Wrong. I took a screenshot of Ms. Davis' PPT slide so I could consider it further after the webinar concluded. The first bullet point was "Assessing/Grading for Equity." Second from bottom was "Recognizing, Examining and Confronting Bias." During virtual learning, I listened to a teacher pushing the LGBT agenda during 6th grade English class using this graphic. Completely inappropriate for English class. SSSAS has lost its way.

You can’t make something not exist by pretending it doesn’t exist, Gov. DeSantis.

If you are so opposed to that unicorn graphic that you had to post it here to complain, please, please just leave the school already.

Yes, SSSAS is welcoming of trans students, and black students, and all types of students. That’s what we want, as parents who have been there many years and have many years ahead of us as well.

There are schools that will align with your anti-gay views. SSSAS is not one of them.
I for one am so grateful that SSSAS has caring, engaged, and truly exceptional faculty so that my children learn about these things in the best possible environment, from experts and thoughtful, intellectual people.

You should stop spending your time complaining on an anonymous board. Really, what’s your goal here?

SSSAS is open-minded, inclusive and progressive and you hate it. Go somewhere else. Please.

I’m black and this place sounds like an effing nightmare. Get over yourself with the anyone-who-disagrees-with-me-needs-to-check-their-white-privilege boring nonsense.
