What do you love/not love about SSSAS?

I don't like the hard left shift of the past 5 years. White boys are no longer their desired demographic as evidenced by their recent Admissions promo video. Grading for equity is the #1 DEI policy and it bothers me. I'm not going to support it with $40k+ annually.

What does grading for equity mean?

Grading for equity means that black kids will get more leeway with grades than whites for similar work. It was the #1 point that our diversity person mentioned about on the State of the School webinar. The Administration wants this.

There are Affinity Groups that meet on campus for black, hispanic and asian kids. No Affinity group for whites - obv. I do not like this segregation based on skin color BS.

LBGQ is also being pushed heavily in classwork and socially. The LGBQ high school club hosted a pizza party and invited MS kids without notifying parents. Required books in English push a pro-trans agenda. A recent guest speaker was a trans person pushing that narrative.

I'm not anti-gay or racist. My white son is very good friends with a black kid and has been for years. He's been to my house many times. His parents make about what we do, so there's no economic disparity. How is it fair that he is eligible for more flexible grading than my son simply because he's black??

My kids go to this school. I missed the State of School Webinar. I can’t believe this is school policy. I am sure we are not the only ones.

I can't believe it either. PP, are you saying that the administration actually publically stated that POC children are given more leeway with grades than white children? That's a hell of a bold statement to make.

Agree with you about the affinity groups, although in fairness, many DMV private schools offer these. No way will my kids take part, but they are there and that's not unique to SSSAS.

sounds like SSSAS is riding the woke train to mediocrity.

I’m fascinated by the fact that the school pushes white guilt while also still facilitating a pro-lacrosse culture (a sport known to attract more white athletes). Seems like SSSAS is having a bit of an identity crisis. My child was really wooed but then during the admissions process but ultimately picked another school, somewhat to our relief. I never got a genuine feel for SSSAS, seemed like a lot of slick marketing but no clear vision/mission.

The infinity groups are the worst. Not at SSSAS, but a different Alexandria private. Pre-Covid, our school required kids to join an affinity group and meet during the school day. There were quite a few to chose from: women, LQBTQ, Black, asian, atheist, Jewish. My white, straight, Christian son had no group to identify with. They created a group for all the white, Christian straight boys - “supporting diversity” affinity group. First meeting they had to write down all their privileges in a list. It was a great way to make my then 12 year old feel like sh*t about himself.

I sense you are frustrated. Were the affinity groups open to any students? E.g., could a white, straight Christian boy join the LGBTQ group as a demonstration of solidarity with them? Like, “Hey, I’m straight, but do want to learn about your experiences as a LGBTQ and support you in that”. Or the Jewish group to learn about the perspective of a different faith tradition? My DS is Catholic (I’m not), but I would have no issue with him joining in the atheist group if he wanted to question the existence of God. Belief after questioning is closer to true faith than blindly accepting what you’re told your whole life.

Why the hell would a straight 12 YO boy want to or even worse be forced to join an LGBT affinity group? Do you not know anything about kids?

As a parent who is happy with the school, I am embarrassed by the most recent recruiting video. Can't imagine why anyone would think it would entice a prospective student or family.

Agree. Lax runs its own organization within SSSAS. Coaches, parents, players - they are Tier One in terms of financial donors, social hierarchy, etc. Administration steers clear of this entire subset of the Upper School because this group is where the elite college admissions and large donations come from. They get a pass for misbehavior, social exclusion, etc because the Lax machine must churn on.

Administration pushes the Leftist woke crap on the rest of the Upper School and Middle & Lower.

Look into it - I was in shocked disbelief too. Ask questions.

+2 I wouldn’t say frustrated. Of course he could join any group, but he didn’t identify with any of them. I think requiring kids to join ANY affinity group in 6th or 7th grade is just stupid. Optional is great. If the purpose is to empower those that feel marginalized, how does it help to make a 12 year old boy feel guilty and embarrassed about his privileged status?
