Meanwhile, biases are starting to sink Walls the school that became too white and UMC to stay out of the sights of the DC ed powers that be. |
Ok, Black 71%, National Black SAT 933 Hispanic 21%, National Hispanic SAT 978 Banneker Average is 1120 |
Oh now letting in too many black students is sinking Walls. Stay classy and racist, DCUM!! |
+1 Every conversation or thread about Walls admissions standards ultimately devolves into racism. It is disgusting. |
| Too many unprepared students of all races at Wall this year and, presumably the rest of the years of Bowser’s tenure as Mayor. |
. Wrong. PPs are concerned about standards falling at Walls, not racial politics. Stop with the childish race baiting. |
I am not race baiting. I’m not the person who said Walls became too white and UMC . |
One of the long-term subs this past semester is not a regular teacher and is French. |
Yes, and you’re a racist A$$. |
What else explains why DCPS has ditched the Walls entrance exam? The exam was scrapped because...low SES minority students representation at Walls has increased in recent years? DCPS could have done what NYC did long ago, poured resources into helping low-income MS kids prep for a tough but transparent magnet HS school entrance exam and admissions process. I used to work at an SSAT (NYC's HS entrance magnet test) prep center in the Bronx that's still running. The center's after-school and weekend services are free and open to any MS student in the borough. The center, supported by government and private sector resources, is part of a network of prep centers in NYC. Some of the students I worked with lived in local public housing, but they turned up every week for months, and went on to nail the SSAT. As a result, they were able to attend magnet high schools, e.g. Stuyvesant and Bronx Science. Ditching the Walls entrance exam as a shortcut to enabling more low SES minority students to attend is very short-sighted. Ferebee would be much better off raising standards while shifting resources into robust academic and exam prep for any applicant who wants it. We're already seeing how admissions without the exam is hurting Walls. The 9th grade cohort clearly isn't as strong as the 10th grade group. |
Remember that DC is a very young city in terms of home rule. So a lot of things other cities have gone thru and learned haven't happened here yet. It takes a forward thinking leader which we don't have. Mayoral control is no longer needed. Ferebee is basically useless IMO. DC has the resources to do exactly what NYC and other cities have done. The leadership is what's missing.... |

+100, that's about the size of it.
Ditching admissions test to flourishing hs magnet programs is a blunt instrument that won't yield the desired results. |

Step 1 - remove PARCC requirement (pre COVID)
Step 2 - remove entrance exam Step 3 - Fire Principal Congratulations DC in winning the race to the bottom |
| Worrying developments to us here in Ward 6. Many Cap Hill families have relied on Walls for high school since the 1980s. Those who haven't found spots at BASIS or Latin at in the last few years do not welcome news of Walls' setting a lower and lower bar for admission. |
| Walls would be better off admitting by lottery for 8th graders with a halfway decent GPA. Firing a respected head and dropping most admissions requirements isn't sending the right message to prospective families. |
