How are things going at Walls this year?

Just as Walls has shifted in demographics over the years so will Banneker. In 5 years (or less) it won't be a Title I school. Maybe this is what DCPS actually wants and figures Walls will be ok regardless. Doesn't make sense but time will tell.

Interesting. I live in Shaw and have two elementary kids and would love to send them to Banneker.

But not until you see a safe amount of white students there right? We know, you don’t want to be an only. DCUM is so predictable. Walls is failing, Wilson failing and has behavior issues, where’s the next safe spot where I can send my kid for free to be able to say you’re still cool that you live in the city. I have been imploring you all to look at Banneker for over a decade and have only received “but I don’t want my kid to be an only” or “Banneker’s SAT scores are only barely above national average” for many years. 😂😂

Posted above. I took you up on your offer. My kid actually loved the interview in comparison to Walls and changed the first choice to Banneker. PSAT scores = 99 percentile for both. Parents have to get out of the low SAT scores mindset. If your rich and your kid doesn’t have test anxiety, they will score high. SAT scores track family income. (But I also know it’s code for I’m scared of minorities!)

Let me see if I understand your logic.

You are rich and white and your kid is handful of kids in DCPS who scored 99% on the PSAT. And you are at Banneker.

Right.

Bright, hard-working HS students who've been reading literary classics for pleasure since middle school and did well in algebra and geometry have a strong tendency to score high on SATs, regardless of parents' income. Banneker's subpar SAT scores are indicative of most students' subpar prep. No surprises in a city without ES GT programs or test-in MS programs with scores of highly segregated K-8 programs.

DCPS' determination to beat back high SES/white buy-in at Walls is a grim development indeed. Walls was on the up and up until the strong head was canned. What a terrible shame. How deeply misguided on the part of all responsible. Only a new mayor could arrest Walls' slide.

Well Google. There is plenty of research out there on SAT scores correlating to household income. Banneker is a challenging school. That’s all I am going to post because this thread isn’t about Banneker. Smart white kids will be challenged and thrive at Banneker along with smart (and nice) peers. Great school.

NP. There are probably a dozen white families at Banneker.

If Banneker were indeed a "great school," its SAT scores would be far higher, period. But I don't doubt that there are some Banneker students still manage to excel academically, or that we'll see a small but steady uptick in numbers of white students enrolling in the years to come.

At this rate, we're going to watch Walls' SAT scores steadily decline in the years to come. There just isn't any good reason for this to happen. The brightest low SES minority students in this City simply won't benefit from watering down admission standards at Walls. Catastrophic move, DCPS.

A little more, enough for Banneker stakeholders to boast that the school is highly diverse.

If that poster’s kids are in elementary, why would they have been thinking about HS a decade ago? Now that people with kids just entering the system are considering Banneker, you want them to…?

I’ve seen PPs like PP above. They all say that. And every year, they remain Walls or bust.

Banneker is about 50% nationally for SAT scores. You think that is funny? That is supposed to be an endorsement?

How do Banneker vs Black students nationwide because anyone that has take an elementary stats class would know that’s the better measurement given that the school is 99% black. Or does that not fit into your narrative.

National average for black students is 933.
National average for all students is 1059.
Banneker’s average is 1120 (almost 200 points higher than their national peers).

That’s actually quite impressive and for anyone that continues the opposite narrative is being racists. Plain and simple.

Amazing how much of a lightning rod "Banneker" is....This is Walls thread and parents with kids starting high school are genuinely interested in what's going this year....Go hash out your bias and other issues somewhere else..smh

What is the situation for french classes? Do the subs speak French or is there no french at all?

Actually, Banneker's average SAT is 1111.

SWW is majority non-white and the average is SAT 1274.

Using majority non white is NOT the same and you know it. Use black vs black since that’s the stat you know and Banneker is basically 100% black.

There is a French teacher now so half the classes are taught by a French speaker. The subs are other teachers so no they don’t speak any French.

But not every kid in DCPS - or Banneker or Walls - is Black.

You just like to make things up?

Banneker is 71% black.
