Why do we eat garbage for breakfast?

But I want her having something filling and nutritious before going to school. No idea when a donut became a breakfast food………

Blue collar workers who burn a lot of calories before lunch. But office workers who do nothing but shuffle paper and respond to emails all day in a chair in an air conditioned office should not be eating such high calorie food for breakfast -- nor do you need to guzzle coffee all day, but I suppose that's another topic all together.

That's even less healthy than some of the dietary choices OP is criticizing.

Why? I’ve been doing this for over 20 years and am perfectly fine. No need to sheepishly follow rules.

Every time I go to the cereal aisle of the grocery store, I'm convinced that the destruction of America is nigh. It's all so much crap. But, then I walk away and don't think about it anymore.

We don't eat those things for breakfast and I'm going to assume most people don't either.

The kids have a breakfast burrito (just an egg and some cheddar cheese in a tortilla), a banana, or Cheerios (regular Cheerios, not the weird varieties).

The adults will have some fruit and nuts (my preference if I'm going to the gym early), oatmeal, or toast and egg.

On the weekends, I may make kodiak cakes. Rare though because lazy. We also might have bacon, also rare because lazy. We only go out for breakfast when we're on vacation because it's a stupid meal to drop money on.

Wheat toast, real strawberry jam and coffee is my usual. DH eats steel cut oats, coffee, and a banana.

I do make a huge, vitamin and calorie rich breakfast each day for my DS15 but that's because he's underweight and unlikely to eat much lunch at school.

I don't know many people who eat junk for breakfast on regular basis-- if anything, a lot of people don't eat enough for breakfast.

I think that pancakes and sweet desserts are common in European countries as well, and the main difference is volume and not interspersing those with healthier things.

Personally I hate eating those things for breakfast, except eggs and toast. I would much prefer leftovers from dinner from the night before.

Hoecakes with butter & honey were Washington's favorite.

But a traditional breakfast of the time that was served at Mount Vernon was coffee, tea, and cold meats along with vegetables.

The Washingtons ate breakfast at 7am, dinner (lunch) at 3pm, and nothing for supper (dinner) other than tea. Meals lasted at least an hour if not more, which is not typical for today at all.

Incorrect. The Washingtons entertained extremely frequently with elaborate dinners and drinks. What an odd post you made. GW was receiving guests on a near constant basis.

Waffles, pancake, crepes....? What is this trash? They're basically nothing more than rudimentary cake like batters that after cooked, you add a whole bunch of fat and sugar to - they're pretty much deficient of almost any nutritional value. Cereals? Highly processed trash that often contain tons of sugar. Bacon, sausages, biscuits and gravy, etc. combined with eggs.....cholesterol and fat bombs. Hash browns and home fries....mostly empty calories loaded often times with salt and cooked in tons of oil. You often feel very nasty after eating 'traditional' American/western breakfast foods. Why is it that we evolved to eat what are essentially desserts for breakfasts? No nutrition, high in calorie, high in fat/cholesterol/sodium meals. I remember going to Japan where they served traditional breakfasts consisting of a small piece of broiled fish, a little bit of rice, maybe some fruit, some kind of veggie, and a little bit of soup. So many other places in the world just treat breakfast almost like any other meal where you'd consume foods with actual nutrition.

If I’m at a hotel w typical US breakfast options I eat oatmeal or plain yogurt w granola for breakfast. If at home I usually either eat leftovers from the previous days dinner or nothing at all. Many days I don’t eat breakfast and just have some coffee or tea and water, wait til lunch to eat the first meal. If we happen to have smoked salmon, cream cheese and bagels (I don’t go shopping for this or plan it but every once in awhile we happen to have all the ingredients) I’ll have that for breakfast. Generally I like something w protein, something a bit more substantial in the morning. I am pescatarian so I don’t eat bacon or sausage and I hate eggs so I don’t eat them but if I was a meat eater and egg eater I’d much rather have that than cereal or pancakes.

I eat dinner leftovers for breakfast. Sometimes a salad and avo toast with a soft boiled egg or egg and rice. I have a very physical job and enjoy a hearty breakfast (or late brekkies when doing if). Have what you like.

My DH is from Middle East. His typical breakfast here at home is the Arabic pita bread with yogurt, tomato, fresh mint, a drizzle of olive oil, rolled up. Or a big bowl of beans with lemon, garlic, olive oil, cumin and some fresh vegetables on the side. But he also grew up in a poor country during war time in Middle East- women didn’t work and schools weren’t handing out pop tarts and chocolate milk. These things weren’t readily available either. If you wanted to eat, you had to cook and prepare food to eat.

Those Middle Eastern breakfasts are really easy to make, especially if you already have the pita made or the beans cooked.

People gravitate toward something that can be easily transported to work or school (granola bars, bagels, etc). I've been trying to do better with my breakfast choices because I agree that it's easy to snarf down a day's worth of carbs and sugar in one go, but you should consider the needs and requirements of an average working parent trying to get out of the house on a weekday.

I make my breakfast in an Instant Pot. Dump things in, then go get dressed/do everything else, and then by the time I come back into the kitchen, breakfast is ready. It's really not that hard.

American breakfasts are the best things when you're at a hotel and about to spend the day walking around. All those calories are steadily burned during the day.

Nah...all of the grease and sugar makes me have slight nausea all day.

The yogurt pita concoction he makes in a couple minutes on his way out the door to work as I make kids’ school lunches. The beans, well those aren’t as easy. You have to overnight soak, then cook a long time, then smash a bunch of garlic, squeeze several lemons, cut a lot of vegetables- we usually do this as a Sunday morning breakfast. Sometimes my son (10) will ask for chickpeas for breakfast. Same theme as the above, but I just rinse a can of garbanzo beans, microwave, then add some chopped lemon, cumin, and olive oil. It is a decent quick substitute.

Strong but moderately sized coffee and only in the morning.

Big V8.

Walk kids to school.

Shit my brains out.
