S/O Aren’t our kids going to have to wear masks in school?

Six hours or so. Provided they even have school.

Why not get them used to wearing them now? Inside and outside?

I don't believe that we are going to have anything but DL until at least the spring, but I do have my children wear masks whenever we leave our apartment. And yes, I assume that if/when there is school before a vaccine is widely available, our kids should be wearing masks.

I have no idea, but my child wears a mask.

My kids (3 and 6) wear masks whenever we leave the house. My little one hated it at first but she now does it no problem. I let them pick out fabric they liked and made them myself. That helped with buy in.

My child’s school is scheduled to open (small private not in DC only for elementary). We have been wearing masks outside. We just let each kid buy 6 masks of their choice.

The school recommended practicing at home- first step is watching a movie with a mask on so you can get used to it.

Mine wear masks at stores. But not in uncrowded outdoor areas or in our car.

You think kids are going to school? Cute.

My 3 year old has to wear one at daycare and now understands she can't play with other kids without one. We don't wear any at home or if we're the only ones out.

+1
Masks = necessary but not sufficient to make school safe.

So what kind of masks did you decide we’re good for school?

This is a weird post. Yes, if kids go to school, they will need to wear masks. Yes, if your kid does not already wear a mask, they should practice -- aside from school, you may need them to wear it to the doctor or on an emergency grocery run.

Private schools that plan to open are already asking families to start practicing with masks. There are a bunch of YouTube videos aimed at kids, about how to properly wear a mask.

Yes, kids should be wearing masks when they are stores or public places with other people.

I will point out that masks have been worn regularly by kids and adults in many Asian countries for ages. If you have a cold, you wear a mask. It is deemed polite and acceptable. cities are crowded and wearing a mask decreases your transmission of viruses to other people on the metro, on the street, in stores and at work. Kids wear masks as well.

There is nothing different about kids in the US then kids in these Asian countries. Maybe that comes from living through SARs and other similar viruses so that people in those countries have learned the importance of wearing a mask. I believe that mask wearing was already an accepted practice before SARs and the real difference was that people who were not sick started wearing masks as well for safety purposes.

The US would be in a far better place if people would realize that wearing a mask decreases transmission and allows people to go about a far more normal life. This will help the economy. Or we can continue to argue that we have the right to not wear a mask because "freedom" while trying to open everything and living a more normal life and keep transmitting the virus at a higher rate making it harder to really open things up.

My kids have been to camp, where they are wearing masks for 6-7 hours straight. They have taken classes that require masks (art classes, not required school). My older kids work and they went from no masks to masks for the entire work day with no work up to it. If it's something they want to do, masks are no issue.

Also, my kids like to get out of the house, so I will take them grocery shopping with me or other places that we go (which actually aren't many, as I'm thinking about it). Rarely does anyone forget their masks. But, we keep a couple of extra in each car for just in case.

My point is this. It's not that hard and by practicing, we can normalize it because it is our current normal. I hope everyone is working with their kids. And I hope people aren't wringing their hands and talking about how hard it is and how their kid isn't going to be able to do it. But, I guarantee you that if it is something they want to do, wearing masks is not hard at all.

Our county is doing DL until at least February, and likely the full year, so not worried to much about this in July.

My kid has been wearing a mask every time we leave our apartment for months. I have no idea if school will be in person or not, but unless we are outdoors and away from other people, she wears a mask. She's totally used to it now and it doesn't bother her at all.
