Bowser expands mask order in DC

Basically you have to wear one if you step out your front door, unless you're "vigorously exercising."

Instead of shutting down indoor dining, indoor church services and gyms -- three things nearly every scientist agrees should not be happening right now -- Bowser issues this nonsense.

Now we've jumped the shark. We know enough about transmission of this virus now to be selective in where we require masks. All this is going to do is burn through peoples will and create mask fatigue quicker than a more selective approach would.

Scientists: We need to shut down indoor dining, indoor church services and gyms to regain control of the pandemic.

Bowser: Anyone who goes outside must wear a mask, even if there's no one else within 500 yards.

The worst part is, she probably thinks she's showing good leadership here.

You know, I would have thought this was ridiculous at 10am today. But at 10:30, DH & I we’re outside with our 4 year old for about 10 minutes while she was trying out her new bike + training wheels. We didn’t have our masks because we were going back and front on the sidewalk in front of our house, an can (and do) easily step into the grass to distance if someone passes.

Well, we were actually about to head home for them to get masks to go around the block, when the crazy lady from down the block walked by. (I don’t mean that to be derogatory. When she is lucid she can be very friendly but she is often not lucid and/or drunk and she can be angry and unpredictable.)

Anyway, she had her mask under her chin, per usual. We stepped into the grass to let her pass. She walked by, and as she passed started coughing, without covering her mouth at all. We stepped into the street and watched her cough (and spit onto the sidewalk) repeatedly as she passed our house and continued on to her house. We waited in the road with our 4 year old and her bike for a couple of minutes, then walked home in the street. We had to cross the sidewalk to get to our house, and agreed that I guess it’s masks for all 3 of us all the time now. Because who knows when the crazy lady just walked by coughing and spitting without covering her mouth.

I feel like we’ve been middle of the road about masks up to this point. We almost always have them, but only pull them up when passing someone or if we can’t step away. But we’ll have no problem complying with this new rule now. That was just scary this morning.

I'm all for expanding the mask rules, but your're 100% about the bolded. It's asinine that these things are still open with cases rising and schools unable to open.

Unless your crazy neighbor wears a mask it won't matter. Your mask isn't going to fully protect you if she is coughing close to you.

The new mask order would have been find if she also had announced that we need to shut down indoor dining again. She didn't, though, and now she just looks like an imbecile who isn't paying attention to what the experts are saying.

I'm going to guess, however, that the indoor dining shutdown is right around the corner, probably to be announced in a Friday night news dump.

What took her so long? She should've done this months ago.

The key thing is whether it will be enforced. Pretty pointless otherwise.

I'm guessing theres a surge post protests. Surprise.

I hope so. Better late than never.

This is absurd. It is healthier to be outside without a mask getting exercise and sun than staying indoors.

Ship has sailed. This surge is due to indoor dining/gyms/socializing.

She should just impose a 24/7 no-exceptions citywide curfew

Wouldn’t be any more stupid that this current idiocy.

Bingo.

You wearing a mask will protect your crazy neighbor from your germs. It won’t do squat to protect you from hers.
