CES and Magnet Programs what happens in the Fall?

Anonymous
Does anyone know what happens with CES and the MS and HS Magnet Programs in the Fall? It doesn't seem possible to offer them both in person and fully distance learning, so which will it be? If a family wants to opt out of in person school will they have to withdraw from CES or Magent Programming?

Why would you think DL and in-person cannot be offered as a choice? There is no requirement that all students in a magnet cohort have to learn the same way.

Once the district decides on its general plan, individual schools will work on details for specific programs at their schools. That is when you will hear more.

My guess is that they’ll group the distance learners online differently than per school. For example, if there 25 kids from
Barnsley and 15 kids from cold spring who want 100% online, they’ll have the same CES teacher. The other kids in person part time will just stick with their schools.

The Middle School Magnets have 1 teacher for each class. For example Eastern has 1 English teach for 6th grade, one World Studis teacher, and one Media teacher. They won't be able to provide in class instruction four days a week and do live distance learning five days a week.

Seems like CES would be easier than the MS or HS magnets because there are so many more students.

There’s a limited number of experienced staff for the MS programs. I think two schools, King and Clemente, have the ability to teach have two teachers per course and thus, do one solely in DL and one in hybrid. But that is not the case at Takoma and Eastern. Maybe HS is better?

I hope they save the budget and can them all.

This is why its not realistic to do both.

Maybe families should have to choose DL only if they want CES or magnet. Reasonably you can’t force a child with a high risk health condition to do hybrid. But you can tell parents that DL has replaced busing as the new inconvenience cost of highly gifted programs.

Sorry that you're not over your kid not getting in.

Yeah, I have a kid at a CES and one at Eastern in the magnet, and I’m kind of assuming we might not have a choice about DL vs hybrid if we want to continue in the magnets. I’d be okay with that, but I do hope the programs themselves continue in one way or the other.

Would you be willing to write to the BOE?
