Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
| Is it true that they no longer teach cursive in FCPS??? Do kids still need it these days? It seems like they would (although less and less). |
| My FCPS 3rd grader has been practicing cursive in school since October. |
| Yes, they still teach it but I don't think it is given much emphasis. Content over appearance is valued. |

My daughter is in 3rd grade in a GT center and they have touched on cursive a few times, but they haven't really worked on it much at all. The teacher intends to teach it, but like the SOL's, she just doesn't think that it is something worth worrying about. She will get to it before the end of the year...but for now she has plenty of other wonderful and worthwhile things she is teaching them. (I love her teacher!) They are learning how to type right now, and I think that is more important than cursive in the modern world.
Meanwhile, my daughter's friends who remained at our base school spend a lot of time working on cursive and even more time working on what will be on the SOL's. I think cursive is still part of the 3rd grade curriculum. It just depends on which teacher you have as to what emphesis is placed on it. |
21:23 here. My child has a 504 plan, and one element of it specifically addresses needing more time to write. I'm glad that (at least in one specific 3rd grade GT center class) content over appearance is valued. |
| Yeah but if people cannot read the content due to the poor penmanship... |
| OP here. Thanks. I had heard they didn't teach it and I just thought it was funny. My DD is always saying she can't read "curly language" so I'm happy she'll be taught to recognize the letters. her handwriting is so atrocious that I don't imagine she will really master it. That's ok, I do half printing, half cursive and I survive just fine. |
That's what keyboards are for!

| I want to teach my child to write in cursive myself over the summer. He is in the second grade now. I think it is important. |
Unless it was a take-home exam, none of my college or grad school professors let me take my exams on the computer. If they couldn't read what I wrote, it was wrong. That's life so kids better learn how to write legibly. |
Except that college life has changed since then and will continue to change. By the time our children are in college, I'd be shocked if exams were hand written. Even if they are -- they can be printed, they don't have to be written in cursive. |

| They have to be legible and if kids don't practice handwriting and teachers allow everything to be handed in via email or in a Word document, they won't get that practice. Plus, people can tell a lot about you by your handwriting. |
| Good heavens, I hope no one is analyzing my handwriting and thinking they know anything about me! |
LOL! If someone analyzed mine, they'd come up with a few choice words: rushed, harried, chaotic, stressed
