American Academy of Pediatrics says schools should open IN PERSON

Anonymous
"the AAP strongly advocates that all policy considerations for the coming school year should start with a goal of having students physically present in school...

Policy makers must also consider the mounting evidence regarding COVID-19 in children and adolescents, including the role they may play in transmission of the infection. SARS-CoV-2 appears to behave differently in children and adolescents than other common respiratory viruses, such as influenza, on which much of the current guidance regarding school closures is based. Although children and adolescents play a major role in amplifying influenza outbreaks, to date, this does not appear to be the case with SARS-CoV-2. Although many questions remain, the preponderance of evidence indicates that children and adolescents are less likely to be symptomatic and less likely to have severe disease resulting from SARS-CoV-2 infection. In addition, children may be less likely to become infected and to spread infection...

Finally, policy makers should acknowledge that COVID-19 policies are intended to mitigate, not eliminate, risk. No single action or set of actions will completely eliminate the risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission, but implementation of several coordinated interventions can greatly reduce that risk."

our doctor told us the same thing -- that's it's fine to send our kids to school.

There is already a long thread on this. No need for a repost.

Luckily this organization has precisely zero say over what governors, local officials or school districts choose to do in the fall. None. Nada. Zip.

Yep. They are free to ignore experts. Which, of course, is what got us into this mess in the first place.

Let’s not pretend aap is all about science. They were years behind on car seat recs.

This report doesn’t make sense to me. It takes on an air of schools should open back up but then says that desks should be 3-6 ft apart which of course means kids should be 3-6ft apart on the buses as well. That alone means you can’t have everyone in school together and necessitates a hybrid model, which is exactly what most schools are planning.

Schools aren't about kids - they're about teachers. And the teachers unions are not going to sllow this.

The report is stupid. It offers nothing new.

They say schools should try to open in person... if it can be done so safely.

I think we all agree on that?

Cool, so why is my pediatrician's office still encouraging virtual appointments right now and requiring temp checks before you're allowed into the waiting room?

And they only see on patient at a time in a room! Now try working with 15 children at one time.

Is the American Academy of Pediatrics a right-wing anti-science lobby?

Because by definition lots of those kids are sick??

The problem isn't the kids getting sick - we all know this. The problem is the kids transmitting the disease to adults. I love the AAP, but what's great for kids isn't going to be necessarily great for adults.
