Playgrounds in DC if Only/Minimal Kids Playing

Anonymous
How do people feel about letting their kids play on playground equipment if they are the only children there or, if there are a couple of kids there, if your kids are masked up? I am thinking about doing it, but am I crazy?

Seems selfish. By definition, only a few kids get to take advantage. Why do your kids get to play, but not mine?

What?? OP is saying is it OK to take her kids to a non-crowded playground. She's not going to kick your kids out.

I think it's fine, OP. I've done the same. We go early AM, like around 7.

Pp, that is what taking turns is. A few people go at a time. OP can be the one to leave if a lot of people show up.

We have been doing it for weeks. It has been a huge boost to mental health and experts agree it is low risk.

DC playgrounds are open. I have been at the park earlier this week and my observation is …..
people are not masked
people on the playground are not social distancing

There were not a lot of people at the playground and my observations were based off of an early morning observation (8:30 AM) and a lunchtime observation

Why is that selfish? The playgrounds in DC are open in Phase 2. Anyone can use the playgrounds.

OP - you can decide if that is worth the risk. It seems like wearing masks and being outdoors reduces the risk. It also seems like contaminated surfaces are not a significant source of transmission.

That said, there are some people who won’t accept any risk, however low.

I think this is fine. We plan on doing it soon.

I would let my kid do it. If it got too crowded I would leave. I would also take hand sanitizer.

I wasn't going to do it, but apparently my parents (who are watching my kids for free) took my kid yesterday. They did make him wear a mask, and I'm sure made him wash hands. That said, they are the ones at higher risk, so if they feel comfortable I won't push back.

Why are you saying contaminated surfaces are not a source of transmission? We have no contact tracing and they are still pushing hand sanitizing nonstop.

I think masks do help, but kids keeping on masks at a playground without fiddling with them with their hands seems extremely unlikely.

Yes, if playground is empty, and you have hand sanitizer available, I'm in favor. I'm not ready to let my kid play near other kids yet, but I'm okay with just our family using the equipment.

Because the CDC (and others) said so. We focus on surfaces because it gives us a semblance of control. Not because they are the main problem.

I think it’s fine. Playgrounds are open. If it’s not safe they should close the playground. We abide by the rules.
