Where to Buy Drapes?

Anonymous
I'm having a terrible time finding drapes. I need energy efficient (plus noise reducing) drapes that are not silk but don't look cheesy. I simply can't maintain real silk with a crazed toddler. I'd like to keep the price to under $50/panel, so I can't afford anything really expensive.

So far, I have been to:

- Bed, Bath, and Beyond
- The Great Indoors
- Target
- Wal-Mart
- K-Mart
- JC Penney

Where else is there to go? I have no capacity to make them myself, and I need to see them in person. I also don't really want to buy online because they look really different in person.

I know--I need them, too. Bought some at Ikea that I now don't care for. They are pretty, but just don't work in the room. I'm going to move them into another room and look for new drapes at Coutry Curtains--

I'd be surprised to find lined curtains for under $50 a panel. Fabric is expensive and you need two layers to get any energy efficiency.

Maybe if you go to G Street fabrics and see if they recommend a seamstress who can make them for you if you buy the fabric.

Next Day Blinds and Windows To Go might be options.

Smith and Noble is online, but they will send you fabric swatches. You'll probably have to increase your budget though.

We have the PB Kids sailcloth blackout drapes for the baby's room. They look pretty decent and provide some insulation, but the colors are limited. They're in your price range, though.

West Elm also has some nice drapes. We have their bi-color silk ones in our bedroom and they're lined.

Definitely try Ballard Designs. They have some lined drapery panels in your price range on their website. I have ordered from them before (furniture, not textiles) and I'm happy with the items I purchased.

You might also try Pottery Barn and Crate & Barrel and see what they have on sale/clearance.

Maybe if you go to G Street fabrics and see if they recommend a seamstress who can make them for you if you buy the fabric.

G Street does custom drapery; I don't think they will recommend a seamstress since they do it in-house. But there's NO way to get them for $50/panel; you cannot even get the fabric for that little, let alone the labor & installation. We just had drapes made there, and I happened to place the order during a huge sale (50% off labor, which is unusual for them to offer) and the fabric was also discounted, and it was still quite expensive. They won't make drapes unless they measure for you, and it's $100 to have them come out and measure - that's a fee, not credited toward your order. Then you have the cost of the fabric and the lining, the hardware, and the labor (which includes installation). I love ours - they're beautiful. But they're not $50/panel. The same will be true of Calico Corners.

I was very surprised to find drapes we liked at JC Penney - we ended up needing to order ours online because they didn't have the color and length we needed in stock, but I agree with needing to see/feel them in person. Not sure about noise-reducing, but they definitely have energy efficient drapes. Good luck in your search!

I second West Elm. Also, Urban Outfitters has some surprisingly nice drapes for not too expensive.

Lowes also has a selection of ready made drapes.

I just bought these insulated curtains at Sierra Trading Post:

$37 for a pair of insulated drapes! I haven't hung them yet (a disagreement with DH about what rod to use), but they seem passable--the lining looks pretty thick.

STP has a very good return policy ($5/box returns with preprinted UPS label), so it might be worth the both-ways shipping cost to order some & see if they'll do. (They're also ALWAYS getting new stuff, so check back next week if you don't like this week's colors.)

We love the drapes we got at Restoration Hardware. But they were annoyingly expensive.

We also saw some we liked at IKEA but unfortunately the color wasn't right for the room.

The Restoration Hardware Outlet in Leesburg. There is also selection at the Pottery Barn Outlet there, but I prefer RH>

Got a great lined pair from West Elm for our bedroom. Bought some blackout curtains for DS's room and one curtain was about 2 inches longer than the other!

My entire house is JC Penney drapes. Try the catalog and sign up for online discounts so you can get free shipping or an additional 10% or so off. If you don't like them, JCP refunds all of your money, including shipping. When I can't decide, I buy three or four different ones and just return the ones I don't like.

I've actually seen some nice and inexpensive drapes at Tuesday Morning but it is totally hit or miss.

How about World Market or Pier One Imports?
