EmpowerEd DC Petition - Explore outdoor learning this fall

Interesting concept, and it looks like it's been done in Denmark. What say you, DCUM? Would you feel more comfortable with your kids returning to in-person learning if classes were held outside?

Lol, dcps teachers won't even go out for recess if it's under like 60.degrees or if it's rained that week. You're not going to get most of them into some Scandinavian forest school thing.

How would this work once the weather turns cold?

Or hot? Or windy? Or raining? Or when there’s another shooting in front of the school? Or when there isn’t enough outdoor space?

Dude, DC is not California. It has heated schools for a reason, With all due respect do try kite flying.

This. Just normal 30 minute recess on a nice day has been a struggle.

I'm a DCPS teacher and I would love this.

certainly they could try to spend some instructional time outside, but the whole day seems unrealistic.

This would work in my prior SoCal coastal town. Not here—the heat, humidity, mosquitos, and winter cold would make this unpleasant, especially for kids who don’t have appropriate winter gear to keep them warm.

Our kids missed recess for most of a semester due to mosquitos.

Let us know how educating kids for the day in the local park goes.

I think they also suggested closing down streets to gain space? What could possibly go wrong?
