Statehood for DC is especially important now that the country has seen that without being a state, DC has no say over national guard deployments. If DC were a state and Bowser the governor, the national guard and federal prison riot cops could have fortified the White House as much as they want, but Black Lives Matter Plaza / 16th street would have been under state control. If you care about statehood, check out 51 for 51 (can sign up for their mailing list): https://www.51for51.org/news/51-for-51-stand-up-america-issue-statement-on-forthcoming-dc-statehood-vote/ Or, https://dcvote.org . |
From 51 for 51:
|
| I’m for this, but won’t this just be bill number 501 that McConnell ignores? |
Yes- but will passing it now make it easier to pass next year if Dems retake Senate? |
| You need 60 votes in the senate to overcome cloture. No way Democrats get a super majority. |
Yes. It won’t get a vote in the Senate this year because McConnell cares more about power than about average Americans and democracy. But it’s a reasonable shot that next year brings a Dem president and Dem majorities in each house. And, as 51 for 51 outlines on their site, only 51 votes are legally needed; there are a whole bunch of legal opinions at the links above. The obstacle is persuading some Senate Dems. I think almost all are in for DC statehood, and DC just picked up three more moderate Dem Sens (WA, MI, one other state?). If I remember correctly, Sinema and maybe Manchin haven’t come out for it? The federal cop show on 16th street moved a lot of votes on this. |

If you’re not in DC, check the links above — there are forms to email your Senators and ask them to vote for DC statehood when it comes up in 2021. House is already set— there are more co-sponsors than are needed to pass the bill.
Onward! |
| It’s a nice gesture, but that’s all it is. Senate won’t go for it and there won’t be enough Senate votes next year even if Dems take the Senate. |
|
It’s passed the House before.
Talk to me when it passes the Senate. Oh wait — it won’t. |
|
51 for 51.
And if you’re outside DC - call your D Senators! |
|
We cannot afford statehood.
They'll string you along but if you think a 61.4 sq. mile medium sized city with 700K residents will become a state? Good luck with that. See you in twenty years. |
|
DC has more residents than other actual states.
We can’t afford to be a district under the federal thumb. If DC were a state we’d get more back for the fed tax dollars we all pay in (“taxation without representation”). Good idea to call your senators if you’ve ever lived in DC. |
What do you mean by cant afford it? This is a nonsense talking point. |
| If we really believe that Black Lives Matter, then DC must become a state. |
| Does anyone understand why the Founders set up a federal district in the first place? |
