Brenda's for pizza and Archie's for great bbq. We love Perkin's for breakfast for dinner.

We went to Mountain State Brewing Co, which was excellent. And also Pine Lodge Steakhouse which was a bit meh.

Oh yes Archie’s is great!

We always go to Mountain State for pizza and beer, and Dutch's or Ace's Run for more options.

Archie's is top 5 worst BBQ I've ever had but maybe if you're from around here you wouldn't mind.

Agree on Brenda's. I also liked Ace's Run -- we went for lunch and I think got fancy sandwich type food, and it was all good. I thought Archie's was the best BBQ I've had outside of Texas. I wonder what PP got -- I do find that some BBQ places do some meat better than others. I think I got beef brisket and maybe pulled pork.

I did not think the food at the Mountain State Brewery was at all good -- it all tasted like it cane from the freezer section of Giant. But the beer is good and the patio is lovely.

And the ice cream place is good (Lakeside Creamery). There was also a burger food truck parked near the Creamery that I thought was really good, but incredibly slow.

Also, if you stop at the Hagerstown outlet mall on the way, there is a Mexican restaurant in the food court that has the best Mexican food I've eaten in Maryland. It's amazing because the food court is otherwise super depressing (my family was all getting hot dogs at Auntie Annie's and I just couldn't bear it, so decided to take a chance on what looked like a mom and pop operation.) It's like fresh, home-cooked Mexican food. I go back whenever I'm in that part of MD. I guess I'm not sure if it's open with the closures -- I wonder if there's a way to check and see if they are doing pickup.

It's been maybe 2 years since I was there, so my info may be dated.

Update: Looks like the Hagerstown Mexican place is now in a different mall and is only doing catering at the moment due to covid.

I dunno. I used to live in the SW, New Haven and in Brooklyn and have eaten a lot of both pizza and BBQ in many different states in the country. To be fair, I only ate at each of these establishments once and it was two years ago, but I remember the meat at Archie's being pretty perfectly cooked as far as texture and flavor (don't really remember the sides). I think I was really hungry the night we got Brenda's (so maybe that colored my judgement) and we got a mix of pizza and Italian entre type stuff, but I recall it meeting my standards. I'm part Italian and I'm pretty picky about restaurant Italian food. I also travel a ton for work to places with pretty mediocre food, which makes me pretty critical, but maybe also means I have more realistic expectations that someone that only eats in DC or NYC. Since you are apparently an expert on both pizza and BBQ, where do you recommend in the DC or MD area?

Add Canoe on the Run to the list for lunch!

Archies for BBQ, Casselman Bakery for lunches (with something sweet), Rolling Pin Bakery for fresh donuts

Looking for updates on this 4 yr old thread. We will have a family group ages 20-90 for a weekend in April. Looking for dine in, carry out and catering options.

Not much has changed. Still recommend Mountain State, recommend against Archie's.

The 90 year olds might appreciate the comfortable seating at Dutch's, even though I find the food kind of heavy.
