Northern VA gyms can open starting Friday!

Have you heard anything about yours and when it'll open? OneLife member here, and no word yet. But I have not been charged. I would go, especially for classes, because hot humid weather is simply miserable. And my risk is very low.

While facilities can open, the conditions are rather strict:

Mandatory Requirements:
Businesses must strictly adhere to the physical distancing guidelines, enhanced cleaning and disinfection practices, and enhanced workplace safety practices provided in the “Guidelines for All Business Sectors” document. If businesses choose to offer fitness and exercise services, they must adhere to the following additional requirements for operations:

- Post signage at the entrance that states that no one with a fever or symptoms of COVID-19, or known exposure to a COVID-19 case in the prior 14 days, is permitted in the establishment.

- Post signage to provide public health reminders regarding physical distancing, gatherings, options for high risk individuals, and staying home if sick (samples at bottom of this document).

- Occupancy must be limited to no more than 30% of the lowest occupancy load on the certificate of occupancy, if applicable, while maintaining a minimum of ten feet of physical distancing between all individuals as much as possible.

- Facilities should separate fitness equipment to ensure ten feet of separation between patrons, members, and guests using such equipment.

- Facilities should screen patrons for COVID-19 symptoms prior to admission to the facility. Patrons should be asked if they are currently experiencing fever (100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher) or a sense of having a fever, a new cough that cannot be attributed to another health condition, new shortness of breath that cannot be attributed to another health condition, new chills that cannot be attributed to another health condition, a new sore throat that cannot be attributed to another health condition, or new muscle aches that cannot be attributed to another health condition
or specific activity (such as physical exercise). Anyone experiencing symptoms should not be permitted in the facility. Screenings should be conducted in accordance with applicable privacy and confidentiality laws and regulations.

- Instructors and all participants of group exercise and fitness classes must maintain at least ten feet of physical distancing between each other at all times.

- The total number of attendees (including both participants and instructors) in all group exercise and fitness classes cannot exceed the lesser of 30% of the minimum occupancy load on the certificate of occupancy or 50 persons.

- Personal trainers must maintain at least ten feet of distance between themselves and their clients.

- Employees working in customer-facing areas are required to wear face coverings over their nose and mouth, such as using CDC Use of Cloth Face Coverings guidance. Lifeguards responding to distressed swimmers are exempt from this requirement.

- Provide hand sanitizing stations, including at the entrance/exit and where shared fitness equipment is utilized.

- Employers must ensure cleaning and disinfection of shared equipment after each use.

- Facilities must prohibit the use of any equipment that cannot be thoroughly disinfected between uses (e.g., climbing rope, exercise bands, etc.). Facilities must also prohibit the use of equipment requiring more than one person to operate, unless those operating are from the same household (e.g., free weights when it requires a spotter).

- Hot tubs, spas, saunas, splash pads, spray pools, and interactive play features must be closed. Basketball courts and racquetball courts may operate provided patrons maintain ten feet of physical distancing while utilizing such courts. Swimming pools may operate in accordance with the Guidelines for Swimming Pools.

Best Practices:

In addition to the requirements provided above, establishments are encouraged to utilize the following best practices to the extent they are feasible:

- When protective equipment such as face coverings are used, launder daily and wash hands after touching/adjusting face covering while working.

- Use disposable towels and linens where possible. All reusable towels, linens and other porous fabric should be laundered after single use. Store towels and linens in a closed, covered container prior to use.

I got a boxing gym and I think they plan on opening soon. It will be really limited compared to normal....maybe 12 people in a class to meet the 10' requirement? Also sign ups to reserve your slot. I definitely plan on going but expect I can't just go whenever I want and will have to settle for less times than I was used to.

Gold's is opening on the 12th. The concern I have is that if they don't enforce some sort of time limit on people who are there, the millennial bros who play on their phones for 20 minutes between sets will never leave and the rest of us will never be able to get in. (and I have no idea how they would enforce a time limit.) I don't especially want to go back to paying membership fees if I can't actually use the gym, or if using it involves standing in line outside for 30 minutes until enough people leave.

I have seen via instagram that local Orangetheory studios are working to reopen. One studio showed a mock class with instructors to get a feel for how it would work. I still have a hard time imagining how smaller studios like this will work.

My gym, 24 hr fitness, sent something a while back when other states started to open. They discussed general procedural changes they plan to implement, but nothing concrete yet for the local gyms. I am hoping that after yesterdays announcement they send something soon.

24 hour fitness said they would have workout reservations. It would be a set time with time in between for cleaning. I like the idea of reservations so you don't get stuck waiting in line. but as i said above I have not received any official word from my local gym

I’m excited!

I go to OneLife, and have heard their ‘maximum capacity’ is such a large number that even 30% won’t cause issues fitting everyone in.

Several OneLife and Sport & Health locations are scheduled to open Monday! They are still ironing things out and obviously it will not be just as before, but gyms... are opening. Soon!

Are people going to wear masks? Seems like it would be hard to do cardio that way, but I also would be nervous about being around heavy-breathing unmasked folks in a confined space.

My only question is will masks be required?

From what I gather, masks will be required for employees but not patrons. Personally, I will not wear a mask while working out. I overheat already in summer as it is. I think I’ll still go, but not as frequently, and prioritize the things I can’t (or am not motivated to do) on my own.

That was my impression too. I can't imagine wearing a mask while working out, especially while doing cardio.

I won’t wear one either so sadly, if it’s required I won’t go yet.

But as we are seeing with the pools, the reason for the 10th’ spacing is because people won’t have masks so I think that’s not required under his guidelines.

Aren’t masks required inside buildings in Virginia (per the governor)?
