GPS tracking for kids

Anonymous
If there was a gps tracking product that allowed you to always know where your child is, that allowed tracking in the event of an abduction.... would you use it? Do you see any moral dilemma in using it on a young child? Do you know if such a product currently exists? I am not talking about the large "wherify" watches but a small charm or even an implantable chip.

I would use it in situations that warranted it. I fail to see the ethical issues, other than potential health risks.
If I lived in or visited a place with many registered child sex offenders or a place where kidnapping was common, like some Latin American countries, I would use it.

They already exist. They're about $100 and you throw them in a backpack or something.

If your child loses or is abducted without her backpack, it won't do much good.

Nothing's foolproof unless you implant it in your child, and "that" is a moral dilemma. Merely giving one to your child is not.

The chances of your child being abducted are so incredibly small, honestly, I wouldn't worry about it. The chances of a child just getting lost, however, are higher. I see nothing wrong with planning for that.

Why not post this on the parenting forum, it's not off topic to parenting and children.

You can get them a cell phone that has this in it. I know Verizon has one- we used to have it on DD, but never used it.

In addition to the cell phone, I think you have to pay for the service.

I think in an emergency the cell phone cos can do, but if you want the convenience of being able to do it whenever, you have to purchase the monthly access charge which is only an extra 10 I believe.

Personally, I'd be more worried about the danger from phone radiation.

I am surprised there hasn't been a micro-chip for kids yet, I think I would get it for mine. Flame away

meh - i've got an implant in my dog - if they had it for kids and it automatically expired at 18 years - I'd totally do it.

Implanting chips in your children?! That seems insane to me.

What happened to keeping an eye on your kids?

I would do it to. Even good parents sometimes have a kid get lost or stolen.

So you think that every kid that has ever been kidnapped or abducted was from parents who were not keeping an eye on them? That sounds naive to me. You never take your eyes off yours for a split second? I keep an eye on mine, but I would get a microchip if they had them for the same reason I got one for my dog(that I also keep an eye on) bad things happen sometimes no matter how careful you are. I agree with the PP who said they would do it if it expired at age 18, after that it is up to them.
