Ralph Northam yearbook page shows men in blackface and KKK robe

Anonymous
This should now be a time of reflection, healing, and moving on.

The governor apologized for the picture, as he should have.

Fellow Democrats need to lay off of Northam. It does no good to pile on one of our own at such an important time.

We need to come together and heal. This is a prime example of a teachable moment.

Finally, we need to move on. Governor Northam has so much to offer in terms of gun control, secure abortions and other items important to us. His slip up should not be made into such a spectacle that the party is humiliated. We need to move on and govern!

Disagree so much.

This editorial is fantastic, and I hope you read it. https://www.thenation.com/article/ralph-northam-resign-virginia-racism/

He needs to resign and it is really selfish of him that he has not already.

Is this an accredited medical school?

Yes..EVMS in Norfolk. Eastern and southeastern VA were racist places back then, and some parts even now. I'm from there and lived there in the 80s.

Unless Trump and Kavanaugh resign there is no need for Northam to resign.

Conservatives get away with so much sexist and racist crap simply because they fight and fight and refuse to resign. Northam is not the same man now, and needs to beat the GOP at their own game.

I'm not. There is a reason that african american woman have the highest mortality rate.

from the CDC:

In the United States

Considerable racial disparities in pregnancy-related mortality exist. During 2011-2014, the pregnancy-related mortality ratios were:

12.4 deaths per 100,000 live births for white women.
40.0 deaths per 100,000 live births for black women.
17.8 deaths per 100,000 live births for women of other races.

Guess he’s got to beat his own party at its own game since so very many Demicrats want him to resign. If he was actually one of the people in the pictures, why would you recommend not resigning? What moral authority would he have to govern?

Because it was THIRTY FIVE TEARS AGO, decades before he was governor.

I am much older than he is and it was totally unacceptable. I grew up in the Hampton Roads area, not far from where he grew up.
Believe me. It was NOT acceptable.

Lots of racism there, no?

Why do people need to have a “moral authority” to govern?!
That rubs me the wrong way.
I reject the idea that we must only have elected officials who have lived pure and moral lives.
I accept the idea of redemption and grace and believe very strongly in “change.”
For those of you who don’t, I think you should examine what you’re willing to scarifice in order to have a “pure” governor or president.
Because I know very few who have gotten to adulthood without lapses in judgment or immoral decisions.

Kavanaugh appeared in blackface or a KKK costume? Did the senate know about this?

Sadly, another statistic -- domestic violence (also from the CDC):

Do you honestly think that it is okay that he just learned that it was wrong? He is the governor (of a southern state!) - how can anyone think it is okay that he didn't know blackface was wrong until now or last year, or whatever? That he just learned WHY what he did was offensive? Let's give him the benefit of the doubt that it really wasn't his picture/ was a yearbook mix up. I am fine with apologizing right away, but if he already knew how bad it was before this, wouldn't he have known right away that it wasn't him? What he did say was that he didn't recall who he was in the picture, and THEN at the press conference he said, I REALLY remember when I did blackface as Michael Jackson, so I'm pretty sure that wasn't me in this picture because I would remember it. That is not an apology that shows you GET IT NOW.

This is a deeply hurtful thing and it will be divisive to his state and his party. He cannot lead the state anymore.

Can you accept that if someone has done or said racist things, they shouldn't be governing? We are talking about racism here. I don't think people who are racist give good medical care or should be in the police, or teach in schools either. It isn't just about governing. When you affect other people's lives, you shouldn't be racist.
