And of the working mothers, what percent would you say are really full-time (40+ hours a week and generally not present at pick-up, lunch duty, etc)?
|
| About 10-15% SAHM (or SAHD) or else work on a freelance basis so they have as little (or as much) work responsibility as they want. All others work full-time, but many moms (and dads) have flexed their work schedules to do drop-off, pick-up, etc. |
| This changes as the children get older so grade would be helpful in responses. |
| K & PK for my response at 9:55. |

Grade 3
SAHM: 60% WOTH part time: 10% WOTH full time: 30% |
| It really depends on the school. My experience is that there are more SAHMs in the suburban private schools than in DC privates. |

Of the approximately 80 preschool and pre-k kids at our school, there are fewer than 20 enrolled in after-school care (to 6 PM), and of those, not all of them are all five days.
I have no idea if the other kids have a SAHP, parent who works part-time or a nanny/au pair. DC loves the after-school program and we are happy with it. But we do feel like some of the few who have two parents who work full time. |
| Why do you ask or care? |
|
I would say, out of the 22 children in my DC's current class, maybe 3 kids go to extended day on a regular basis. I do not know if those mothers work part-time as I do. I do see a lot of Mom's dressed for the gym at drop-off, but as I can wear jeans (or anything) to work, that doesn't say much.
I did work full time last year and out of 15 students, only one other mother worked but as she was a doctor, she could create her own hours and was always there in time for regular pick-up. I don't know why you wanted this information, but I hope that helps. |

PK - I think there are 1 or 2 moms who are truly SAHMs that do not work outside either PT, Full Time or Free Lance.
Many do the drop off but fewer do the pick up - more nannies do that. Also, many who pick up take the kids home to nannies anyway. |

In the district, there are probably a lot of moms who work in some capacity or another, and that the number increases as the children get older.
I wouldn't worry about it--while some of the most vicious boards on this forum have been about SAH vs WOTH, the vast majority of moms I've personally met have been very understanding and sympathetic of the kinds of struggles both ways. |
| 100% of the SAHMs this year are fatties with poor grooming. Dunno why. |
| In my middle schooler's class there are maybe 15% SAHPs, most of the rest work full time. In the earlier years at least 50-60% of the kids went to after care. It is one of the reasons we chose the school as we did not want to be an outlier or have our kids feel bad about attending after care. |

It really is age dependent. I was very surprised to see a statistic that nationwide once the youngest reaches K less than 20% of parents SAH.
My SIL is a SAHM with older kids and it is hard on her because there are not many SAHMs around her anymore. She envisioned being home when the kids got home and being able to let the kids play with neighborhood kids or go on playdates while she would continue to hang out with moms. All the other kids are in aftercare or with sitters and going to activities. |

Nursery and Pre-K DC private here:
I think about 80 percent of moms either SAH entirely or work part-time with a fair bit of flexibility. Nearly all children are dropped off in the morning by a parent. Pick-up has a few more nannies though. The vast majority of parents seem to mange to show up at all school events - there aren't a ton of events, maybe that's how people manage to do it. Not sure about the older grades. I assume it shifts a bit. |
