Private & Independent Schools
| Don't assume based on pick-up and drop-off or clothing. I'm a law firm partner with a lot of job flexibility, and I drop off and pick up every day and am usually in workout clothes because I go to the gym before work. |
| Like PP, I often do drop off and pick up (or DH does) because we have job flexibility, even though we both work full-time. |
Same for my SIL. BIL has suggested she go back to work, PT if nothing else, but she's pretty adamant about not going. In her case, too lazy.... |
| 4th Grade. About 80% SAHM. But it's an international school, so I think a lot of them (think Embassies) don't have work permits. |
|
Bethesda/Potomac Privates. Pre-K about 90% SAHM. Some with nannies.
K about 70% SAHM. |
Maybe they are teaching English to recent immigrants, or volunteering at a hospital, or delivering meals on wheels. Maybe they have more important things to do than shop or work out. Just a thought. |
DC private Pre-K/Nursery here: I wasn't assuming anything. I know all the parents in my children's classes. It's at least 80 percent SAHM or moms who consult/write/work part-time with lots of flexibility. Also, forgot to mention that many SAHMs at the school have nannies - probably 50 percent at least. Which is why lots of nannies do pick-up in the afternoons, but the parents can all make it for the volunteer events, etc. I don't notice clothing. |
| suburban private. K. Class of 14. 8 WM. 6 SAHM & 1 SAHD. nice balance. |
| At our NW DC nursery school I think 80-90% are SAHMs. I'm in the vast minority of moms who work. I do the drop off and have to have our babysitter do the pickup. And I'd say 1/2 those moms are FT and 1/2 are PT/extremely flexible. |
| I'm pretty surprised by the range of responses -- some classes as low as 15% SAHM, while others as high as 80%. |
You sound so nice. Can I be your friend? |

DC is in K at a well-known DC private.
21 kids 6 SAHM (at least 2 of whom are lawyers or other advanced degree holders) Among the 15 working moms: 6 lawyers 6 doctors/scientists/professors/academics a couple have their own businesses (lobbying, interior design) Of the working moms, most seem to have jobs that allow some amount of in-school presence, whether for class parties, lunch helper, library helper, etc. There are two moms that I almost never see, one has significant travel requirements (husband is at school a lot though) and the other has a rather inflexible and unpredictable job |
That's really rude and not funny. And, I'm not a SAHM -- but I really don't like when women attack each other. |
