Sitting here, I just realized, last 22 years we have been living here, we have never cleaned the dryer vent. Is it something I should look into? If you have done one, how much did you pay for that? Any recommendation for cleaners is greatly appreciated too. TIA. |
I clean the vent that's in the dryer every time.
I clear the flexible vent tube that goes through the wall and outside once per year. Mine is just a few feet long...I never considered calling a professional to clean it. You can unhook it from the machine and get in there with a vacuum hose and duster. I'm sure there are youtube videos about it, too! |
We do it ourselves every couple of years using this tool: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0014CN8Y8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It's shocking how much lint builds up! When it gets really bad, we notice that it's taking a lot longer for clothes to dry. |
Go do it OP, poste haste! It's a fire waiting to happen... |
That’s a house fire waiting to happen, OP. My DH blows ours out every couple of months. We use a modified leaf blower and it works great. We have it inspected yearly when we have the chimney cleaned. |
I have a dryer vent cleaner similar to the one linked above. I think I got mine at Home Depot. Any handyman would do it if you buy this tool. Let him/her keep it as payment for cleaning your vent! |
Not OP, but for those saying this is a must-do - we live in a condo and the distance from the opening of the vent to the outside is >30 feet and has several turns. How exactly would one clean that? |
When I lived in a condo, we had a company come do the entire building from the outside. Ask your property manager if they're doing the same. My understanding is that if it's behind the drywall, it's not the individual's responsibility, but a group one. |
Yes, regularly. Your clothes must take forever to dry. And you are so lucky you haven't had a fire. |
Look into your bylaws and rules®s, dryer vent cleaning should be an HOA responsibility (limited common element.) The HOA should coordinate cleaning of the dryer vents. They *might* be able to bill each unit for the service, but they should definitely be coordinating, and requiring all units participate. If individual units do not participate during the group cleaning, they should be required to provide proof of completed cleaning to the HOA. Clogged dryer vents are a known fire hazard, and can impact the safety of the building. |
We use Swift Vents every year and a half or so. |
When you notice your clothes take forever to dry (which your probably do), I call a vent cleaning company (look at your local listserv for recommendations). The good guys really know how to clean everything - they will clean out your dryer as well. |
Our vent is a short run (about 6 feet) and is rigid tube. We clean once a year. Flex vents I'd probably do twice a year. It's routine home maintenance and needs to be done to help prevent fires. |
We just took all our piping down because we have a basement remodel going on. It was pretty clean. I’m positive the nasty previous owners hadn’t cleaned it in 25 years because the outside was cemented shut and we couldn’t open the grate to clean it. Just saying- it’s not always bad |
Annually at the same time as the chimney sweep. |
