Ward 2 Council member special election - who are you voting for and why?

Anonymous
Just got my absentee ballot in the mail two days ago. Hopefully this thread will not devolve into bashing other candidates; there's plenty of Jack Evans threads for that!

I'll go first:
I'm voting for Kishan Putta. He's shown a lot of hustle on the Georgetown-Burleith ANC. He was previously an ANC member in Dupont Circle. He's always been super responsive whenever I've emailed him or brought up concerns to him in person. And always followed up when I had issues with DC agencies. He's a solid guy and I will be voting for him. He also lives in my neighborhood and we have good conversations whenever we run into each other. He doesn't appear to be backed by a "machine" (eg developers). It's also sweet to see him and wife campaigning together, which I find adorably relatable. He seems like a normal person running for office, so he has my vote.

OK - what about you? How are you voting and why?

I genuinely think he has shills on here to boost "support" for his candidacy

Agree.

Here's their responses to the Georgetowner's April 2020 candidate Q&A: https://georgetowner.com/articles/2020/04/22/ward-2-candidates-qa/
Recent WaPo article on the stakes of the race and how this person will be plunged into solving the District's budget shortfall due to COVID-19: https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/05/11/dcs-ward-2-special-election-is-far-irrelevant/

Also, Jack Evans is not on the ballot for the special election. He's competing in the June 2nd primary. Which is just weird, but he's a weird dude.

I came here to ask the same question. Please folks, give some information on/explain your preferences for the candidates!

Patrick Kennedy. He's been a longtime ANC member in Foggy Bottom and was one of the leaders in the fight to save Francis-Stevens from closure. Not only that, but he's advocated for the school and pushed for modernization funding ever since. He's backed by many local parents, ANC members, Sierra Club, and others. Plus he's the only candidate who has a shot at beating Jack - he has 18% in both polls taken of the race, Jack is at 9% and all the other candidates are trailing Jack. Definitely vote for him if you want a public schools advocate and want Jack gone.

Definitely this. My kids go to Francis Stevens and Patrick is widely supported and appreciated for his work on the school. I met him and he's also super accessible and knowledgeable about every policy issue people asked him about.

I already voted for Patrick Kennedy by mail. He was very helpful on a sidewalk issue near my home, and we had a very long and in depth conversation about our schools. I think he's qualified to run our school system! Will be happy if he is our council person.

Weird that people are supporting Kennedy. He was Jack Evans protege for years! He's running as a spoiler candidate for Jack to get a stronger than usual showing in the Dem primary, IMHO.

Patrick Kennedy, who co-chaired the 2016 reelection campaign for D.C. Council member Jack Evans (D-Ward 2), said Monday that he will challenge the veteran lawmaker who has been ensnared in an ethics scandal.

Jack Evans is definitely pulling the strings behind this. It has his fingerprints all over it.

Weird conspiracy theory you got there. Kennedy has roundly condemned Evans and he is running against Evans, not the other way around. Plus Kennedy is endorsed by Unions, Phil Mendo, Sierra Club, Greater Greater Washington, every neighborhood leader in the ward and their mother, etc. I personally hate Evans and have never voted for him and have already voted by mail for Kennedy in the primary.

It's weird that anyone would think Patrick wants to help Jack. Patrick was the first person to challenge Jack, long before Jack resigned. And he's the only one actually positioned to actually beat Jack.

Rather than conspiracy theorizing, I'm looking at which candidate has actually doing things for our community. The winner there is Patrick.

Patrick Kennedy has almost a decade of service to the Ward 2 community and residents. He is knowledgeable of the issues impacting Ward 2 and the city. He has a realistic vision and will be ready on day one to handle all challenges. He will move Ward 2 forward. He got my vote!

Jordan Grossman and Brooke Pinto are trying to buy their way to a seat on the Council. It is so obvious and people see straight through their campaigns. We don't need a council member with no ties of service to the community representing Ward 2. I am a huge supporter of Patrick but I also respect John Fanning and Kishan for a least having experience as community leaders and a record of providing support to Ward 2 residents.

Jack Evans will romp in the general.

What an undistinguished group and Evans has really done a great deal for the city. Besides were in the midst of a crisis and more left leaning goofiness is exactly what we don't need.
