| If stockings are out then what can I wear on my legs to a cocktail party? Tights? I don't want to go bear legged for a number of reasons I don't want to divulge at this time. If tights, then with heels? Isn't that going to look awkward? Or are stockings ok in winter but just out in summer? Please help! Going to a very upscale type of cocktail party and don't have a clue!! |
| Yes, you should wear tights (patterned tights, probably, depending on your dress). |
Thanks but can you wear tights with heels? Patterned as in different colored checked patterned or like pattern on the tights but one color? Dress is a cocktail dress black - simple but sexy. |

Yes, you can wear tights with heels, you can even wear tights with peep toe heels. The recommendation is to wear tights with a chunkier heel or strappy heel with smaller peep toes. A lot of the old fashion rules are GONE. Google for photos, but here are some tips.

| Yes, you can wear tights with heels. Wear black tights that are textured somehow, not tights that are different colors. |
Thanks ladies!!! Really appreciate the help!! |
You CAN wear tights that are different colored, especially if everything else is black. BUT...you have to be willing to rock it. If you're conservative, definitely go for the textured tights over color. |
Oh, yes, I agree... I was just responding to her second post asking what was meant by "patterned." I should have said, "Don't wear multi-colored tights." I didn't want her wearing, like, black and white houndstooth tights or something. Ha. I love the colored tights look, but it sounds like OP might not be ready for that yet. I can't really pull it off myself either. |
| Hose is not out. Sheer black or opaque black is a nice look if you're wearing a LBD. |

I love tights with heels but not for a dressy event! Tights are for more casual looks. (Remember, the more formidably the clothing, the more casual it is.) If the dress is elegant, you need a total elegant look - hose (or not) and shoes included. Tights look great with a prominent shoe but if that fierce shoe is not evening appropriate, then tights will look silly with an evening shoe.
If the dress is a solid black, you've got two great options: either a sheer black hose with some metallic sheen to it or bare legs that have had a shimmer lotion applied or something like Laura Mercier leg bronzer. It gives a little color and has a subtle metallic sheen to it. Does not rub off on clothes and washes off easily. |
| Women who shop at Saks are very fashionable? The only women I see going in there are 65-95. |
| Sheer hose is out. Tights are the current fashion, even with heels, even with a little black dress. |
| did anyone see on the Globes on Sunday one of the winners (i forget which one but not an actress) was wearing a burgundy knee length dress and black tights? the tights looked awful and out of place. |

No, no, no - no tights with eveningwear! Just imagine them crammed into evening shoes - bulging and puckering everywhere. You can't mix daytime with evening.
Tights are thicker and thus require a sturdier shoe. Tights with evening shoes is like wearing sheer hose with hiking boots. You need to keep the same theme. |
I agree with this advice. |
