| I agree with some of the above posters that tights are less formal than very sheer black hose would be. I agree in general that hose are out for day (e.g., nude hose) but think very sheer black or off black hose are still attractive for evening. Depending on the formality of the event, you could also do black tights but that would dress down your outfit a little bit. Also, make sure to wear either black patent shoes or black suede shoes with your tights. I think there's nothing worse than black tights and regular black leather - it just looks wrong. |
A regular cocktail party and the Golden Globes are very different. I would not wear tights to a very formal event, but for a regular cocktail party, it will look more current. |
It was a bad combination at any event. She looked like a badly dressed college student. I dont think that's a good look for a "very upscale cocktail party". |
| Very sheer black hose is your best bet. No tights with cocktail dress. |

Think about who else will be there. "very upscale type of cocktail party" in DC could mean a lot of different things in terms of attire. I know the fashionistas on this board keep saying that sheer hose is "out", but plenty of ladies will be wearing sheer hose at most cocktail parties in DC if anyone over the age of 40 is in attendance. If you aren't comfortable in bare legs but sheer hose give you the confidence you need, wear sheer hose. Just make it sheer black or as close to your skin tone as you can possibly get. If you get the right color, no one should be able to tell from an acceptable distance that you are even wearing hose. If you wear peep toes, make sure you have sandal toe hose (not reinforced toe) and that the seem is tucked under and not visible.
good luck, don't let the uptight people here get you down and have fun! |
| Yes, sheer high quality hose. Go to Nordstroms, Neimans, or Saks to get some assistance. |
Yes. Possibly with a slight metallic sheen. I agree with 13:11's suggestion. No tights with a sexy black cocktail dress! |

Gwyneth in tights with a cocktail dress:

| First of all, Heidi is not wearing cocktail attire - this is a daytime look. Secondly, do you really want to look like Gwynneth???? This outfit is freakish and shows she can't get dressed without her stylist. |
| Believe it or not, sheer hose is actually back in style with the 20-ish and younger crowd. |
| This thread is rediculous! Hose are not "out" for eveningwear. They may not be in fashion for everyday wear but they are a must in some industries and they are always appropriate for formal events. For an "very upscale cocktail party", ESPECIALLY one in DC (the most conservative and fashion-lacking city ever) I would play it safe and wear either nude or sheer black hose. You may look more in style in tights but that doesn't sound appropriate for this event. Know your audience! Sorry, but this is DC. |

Yes, know your audience. Not sure who pp hangs with but the people I see at parties are fashionable and not dowdy in appearance. Please don't stereotype an entire region! There's a reason why all the high end designers are moving here - and it's because our residents are buying their clothes.
You should always dress for the event, the time it is being held, the location, the purpose and the hosts and guests. OP - if the attendees are older and more conservative, then wear some sheer hose if you want. If they are younger or if this is a Y/H event, do the metallic evening hosiery or apply a sheen to your legs. |
| 17:00 here and I agree with you, 17:32. I made an assumption about her audience based on my own experience of growing up here and being in this city way too long. OP, I'm sure either way you will not be the only one in tights nor will you be the only one in hose. The fact that you have gotten such varied responses to your post is a good indication that there isn't one "right" answere. But do know your audience, as well as all the other things surrounding the event (time, location, purpose, etc.). Have fun! |
