College and University Discussion
| Does Virginia or Maryland have better universities? Deciding where to live in the DMV and would prefer in-state tuition for my kids. Thanks! |
| Really? |
| Virginia. It's not even close. |
|
Popcorn time!
This will get heated fast. I think in general there seems to be a slight majothat feel that while both states have great flagship schools in UVA and UMD, Virginia do had lots of other really high quality options of state schools of various sizes and strengths than MD, making VA the wiser choice. |

UVA, VT and W & M....Vs UMD at top tier.
I would take Virginia over just about any state (at least outside of California). |
Ugh. Sorry for the typos! Should read: Slight majority that feel that while both states have great flagship schools... Virginia also has lots of other really high quality options. Don't worry, I didn't go to college in either state, so my poor typing and sloppy posting is not a reflection on either! |

Virginia. As PP said, it's not even close.
UMCP is a solid school, but it's not as good as UVA or W&M overall, and for STEM you can do just as well as Virginia Tech as at Maryland. Then, once you look beyond that tier of schools, Virginia has a whole bunch of schools (JMU, GMU, UMW, VCU, CNU, VMI) that are more desirable than the next tier of schools in Maryland (Towson, UMBC, St. Mary's) and other schools (ODU, Longwood, Norfolk State, Virginia State, Radford) that are as good as their Maryland equivalents (UMES, Salisbury, Frostburg, Bowie State, Coppin State, Morgan State). |

Virginia
No question. |

Virginia, by a wide margin.
Virginia has: UVA, W&M, VA Tech, JMU, George Mason, VCU, VMI, CNU, ODU, Mary Washington, etc. Maryland has: UMD (which is a very good school, esp. for STEM), but then not nearly the depth or diversity of options that Virginia has. You're talking about UMBC, Frostburg, Towson, Salisbury, UMES. BIG dropoff after College Park, and nothing that compares to the VA schools. |

Yay, another bash Maryland thread.
How charming. |
| FYI, my son applied to four out of state schools. All matched in state tuition rates via merit aid. In state gives very little aid unless you at the very top of applicants, which is difficult in both VA and MD. |
| Odd that the excellent privates haven’t been mentioned. Hopkins on the Maryland side. W&L and Richmond in VA. |
| I live in Maryland ... and the only answer is Virginia. |
| There’s at least one ridiculously exhaustive thread about this already. |
Considering the point of the thread was getting in-state tuition, I don’t see why that’s odd. |
