We got a toll violation invoice from Florida. The car in the picture is not ours but when I look at it online it does look like it has a VA plate with the same license number. Maybe someone "stole" our license plate number? My husband has a vanity plate associated with a hobby and I just learned that he (stupidly) had posted a picture online (in a web forum for the hobby) so maybe someone printed a picture and attached it to their car. Though the license in the picture actually looks different than his but the numbers are the same, so it doesn't seem like a picture of his.
Aside from disputing the toll violation, what should we do in VA since someone is spoofing his license plate or something? Does he need to update his registration to get different plates? Is this a thing? |
| Your car registration has the make and model, right? Can you show that the car in the picture is a different make and model than yours? |
Yeah, i'm going to send them a copy of my registration though I think they need something that shows all the cars registered to our name to make sure we didn't just switch the plates. I'm more concerned about any other issues that may come up having someone driving around Florida with plates associated with my name. |
| I might try the police non emergency line and see if they can advise. Can’t be that unusual and they might know next steps |
OP here. this is what I did! They told me to call the VA DMV to get a report of all the cars registered in our household to prove that the one with the toll violation was not ours. I wondered about filing a police report so it would be flagged that this car didn't belong to us in case they did anything else, but she didn't really think that was necessary. So I guess I'll call DMV Monday and go from there. My husband is pissed about the work it's creating for us and the fact that he's probably going to lose his vanity plates but c'est la vie. I'm sure we'll get another invoice from Florida next month - the toll violations were spread over about 2 weeks leading up to the invoice date so I'm guessing they're not going to stop. |
