HOA letter. WWYD???

Anonymous
We put up a small disinfection structure attached to our front door. It enables us to stay safe. Just got a letter from the HOA that is is not an approved structure. WWYD? I can’t believe they would disallow something like this at this time.

I have no idea what you're talking about, but it underscores why I wouldn't live someplace with an HOA.

What is the appeals process?

We had a neighbor publicly petition the HOA to allow a temporary change to the guidelines forbidding deer fencing in the front yard so she could start a "victory garden" because she was having trouble finding produce in the store. They considered it and said no because there were viable alternatives (motion sprayer for deer, farmer's markets, and farmer produce shares).

If you appeal but also let your neighbors know about your situation, maybe someone will have a workable alternative. Or if lots of neighbors want to attach a "disinfection structure" you may have support.

What the what? Is it a tent you get naked in before you enter your house?

Is it like a purell pump? Or some large contraption that sprays Humans with Lysol?

Keep it up. What will they do to you? Revoke your pool pass? The pool probably won't open anyhow.

I feel like we need to know what a “disinfecting station” is.

OP here. There is an appeals process. I’ll have to look into it because we’ve never had an issue before.

To answer the questions— my husband built a frame out of 2 by 4s. It is about 8 feet long and attaches to the front door. Wrapped around the frame we have attached opaque plastic. Then there is a plastic door that hangs down to seal it off. When we enter the house we disinfect inside the structure. There is also a bin where we have told UPS to put deliveries. It’s honestly ingenious— my husband is great with this kind of thing.

Not OP, but the HOA can fine you for violating the rules. If you don't pay the fines, they can put a lien on your house.

It's a good thing you two found each other! There is no way a HOA is going to let this thing stay. You neighbors' have probably all complained. Please post your neighborhood, I'd love to see it.

What is the consequence of keeping it up?
