Proposed FIFA rule change: 5 subs

This could be interesting. Will likely spread to any youth teams that have sub limits as well.

"Teams will be able to make up to five substitutions under a Fifa proposal to help players cope with fixture congestion amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The substitutions will be allowed in a maximum of three in-play slots and at half-time to avoid unnecessary stoppages but are being proposed in recognition of the long layoff and anticipated high volume of matches if and when games resume"

It's heretical, but substitution limits are the single dumbest thing in the sport, just like antiquated rules in baseball, especially in games where penalties must resolve ties.

Five moments is fine but the game is meant to stress endurance plus stamina. Adding more subs turns a passing, tactical games into a fast break track meet.

We should all support this change! Having only 13 field players during a regular timed match doesn't allow for best overall development for a team of 23ish.

23 kids on a youth soccer team is bigger roadblock then 3 moments.

This is focused on the international professional game.

Please pardon my ignorance but ... subs and moments are interchangeable?

I think the proposed rule will still have three moments where substitutes can enter the field, but will allow up to five subs (including half time substitutes).

Some youth leagues structure the game in such a way to minimize the disruption (limit the moments) but allow for more than three players to swap in.

I like the game played at a fast pace throughout so not totally adverse to more subs but understand the concern it will turn into a sprint fest. One proposal I heard that was interesting was to allow >3 subs in matches than have more than a 3 goal lead in the second half or something like that. Would allow teams not to burn out their stars (and cause injuries) in matches that are essentially already over. Some Premier League teams have been asking for more flexibility, especially in minor competitions, to prevent injuries from overuse.

"Moment" is the actual time when the team makes the substitution. Sub refers to the players themselves.

So you have three moments and five subs. Ex: one moment with one sub and two moments with two subs each = three moments, five subs.
