Writopia Lab in financial crisis from COVID19

We are signed up for our first class with them this summer, but it seemed like a great program and was rated highly here on DCUM.

If anyone is looking for writing enrichment for your kid, wanted to pass on to make give them a life ring to get through this.

We were looking at it for a summer program, but waiting to see if it will be in person or online. My kid is totally burnt out from distance learning. I'm sure it's a great program, just can't spend the same amount of money on online programs now. Are they offering discounts?

I don’t know but doubt it. It’s a big gamble to lower cost and try to make shortfall up on volume. They are a nonprofit, so not much to cut in first place.

By summer school will be over, what other distant learning are you using? We are trying to find more interactive one rather than the correspondence course approach we have at our school.

My child is doing one of their online classes now. It’s good and is a good option for summer. The classes seem to translate well into the online format and I think my child will get something from it.

I think if my DC’s camps are cancelled, we’d probably explore Writopia. I actually think a writing workshop could potentially translate well into an onl8ne experience.

I'd love to put my kid in a 90 minute trimester workshop this summer. Virtual half or whole day camp is too long for her.

Not surprised

The cost of their camps it outrageous for what they list as being offered

I’m tempted. I wanted to send my kid but the cost is high and my kids interest was low

My 10 yo has taken in-person classes at Writopia for much of the last year and really enjoyed it. If I could convince him to take an online class at this point, I'd definitely do so. I'm worried about them going out of business - they're a great resource.

Yes, they are so expensive. I've raised 3 kids in NW DC (kids currently in late middle school) and Writopia is one of the most expensive kids' activities there is.
Something is not right about their business model.

Half day of camp is $575/week!!!

Insanity.

My DD has done their classes for a couple of years now. She LOVES it. She works on her fiction all the time and really gets energized by the class. They are a good option and the voluntary readings they’ve done in the past have been good public speaking practice. I’d recommend them.

If you have a high school junior who will be applying to college in the fall, I highly recommend one of their summer college essay workshops. My daughter walked out of the workshop with a solid draft that needed polishing only. She was essentially done with her CA essay before school started. She had a few supplementals to write, but having the big one done was a huge boost. Also, she had a great framework for getting started on each supplemental essay so they took less time to write. Highly recommend.

Agreed! I was looking at them for DD but was shell shocked by the prices. We ended up finding a cheaper alternative from a smaller company - Young Authors’ Workshop. Same creative writing focus but at a much better price.

I thought their prices were on a sliding scale/honor system?
