Waitlists are now moving. Dartmouth, Michigan, UVA and more...

Anonymous
Have heard of students already being admitted off waitlists. Including Dartmouth, Michigan, UVA and more. Lower international student enrollment is causing colleges to hit their waitlists earlier.

Anyone experience this yet?

OP here. Thank you. I had totally missed that one!

The UVA dean said on their instagram that they had started last week, but she didn't know how many people they would take off the waitlist yet.

Last year for UVA only 8 students made it off the wait list.

This is an interesting question, however, for the class of 2021: Will international applications drop in this cycle?

Sounds like this might be the silver lining for the class of 2021.

Console yourself with that dear parents. Most years, DCUM posters are convinced no prior class has EVER had to face a more selective admissions landscape.

I could see that happening as a result of family financial issues, which applies to domestic and international students alike.

However, my guess is that the reduction in travel for virus and visa issues will be limited to 2020-21 school year. How about internationals admitted for this fall who defer enrollment to fall 2021?

I am not convinced that colleges will be handing out deferments to anyone and everyone who asks. They need bodies on campus asap.

It isn't just lower international enrollment. Some domestic students are choosing to enroll closer to home or at lower-cost institutions (for them - e.g. why go to UVA /UMD/Wisc/UMich) over your own state flagship). Paying $50K for online learning is hard to swallow.

Most of them promise the ability to defer during the admissions process.

I can see them offering price deals for those willing to distance learn.

We have seen first hand that students let in off the wait lists can not defer, so that is an option.

I cannot imagine deferral will be an option, unless it was already in the works. I have see some where one of the conditions is zero credit for any coursework earned during the deferral.

DSs offer from the waitlist specifically said that he could not defer.
