Console yourself with that dear parents. Most years, DCUM posters are convinced no prior class has EVER had to face a more selective admissions landscape.

What could you possibly mean by that?? Are you not aware that 2021 has changes in AP exams and probably no SATs? Class of 2021 is screwed.

They are all screwed exactly the same way though...

Can this thread stay focused on WL for seniors? There are other threads about junior issues.

UVA overenrolled last year. They admitted less this year.

Last year Overall offers: 9,787
This year Overall offers: 8,420

They had ED this year, which accounts for the difference in offers.

They admitted 749 during ED, so there's still a gap of 618 there.

They overenrolled by 175 last year, so that leaves a gap of 443.

If they over enrolled last year, why did they take any off of waitlist?

Possible melt in numbers during summer? Colleges may be gearing up more for the risk of some families electing to pull out or defer due to uncertainty.

They probably submitted something like Valedictorian status that colleges love to tout.

No. Political cases. You would admit the top flyers already so they boost your press release numbers.

Emory promised admitted students that it does not plan to limit deferrals. It will also extend the deadline for deferral requests. As a parent, I appreciate this approach.

Sorry, I came back here but didn’t mean to post twice.

No one knows, but it's probably not good. If they allow unlimited deferrals and screw the class of 2021, then that will take years to shake out. If the international students come back en masse for 2022, then it will be even worse.

If the colleges are allowing unlimited deferrals, then I guess they've just made a cynical calculation that they will do what is popular now and screw the next round (or two or three) of kids. From their perspective, if students defer, they can let in more full-pay kids off the wait list this year, even if it means they can accept very few kids in 2021 (and onward). Having more applications than they can admit in 2021 only makes them look more selective and is a good thing from a college rankings standpoint. They don't care about the impact on the students.

If there's not summer melt, colleges are going to be screwed and will have to scramble to fund dorm space, classroom and teachers. The class if 2020 will again suffer.
